“Have the Students Make It I’m a big fan of Catlin Tucker. In one of her blog posts she asks the question “Who is doing the work in your classroom?” Teaching responsibility and creating leaders starts with giving students responsibilities and having them make decisions. Instead of you staying after school creating a Quizizz game …”

2018 Inventor’s Challenge Invites Youth Creativity and Problem-Solving | iEduc | Scoop.it

"Do you know a budding young builder, maker or scientist? Encourage them to submit their best and brightest ideas for this year’s Inventor’s Challenge. The month-long challenge is underway and closes February 28.The Inventor’s Challenge is designed to provide an opportunity for kids, both in and outside of school, to engage in a creative process that both fosters 21st century skills and is rewarding and fun.Through the Inventor’s Challenge, we’ve watched children make their vision come to life and embrace their entrepreneurial side. Kids are challenged to find a problem they want to solve in their home, school, or community, invent something to solve it, and make a video sharing their invention with the world!Students can submit videos demonstrating and explaining their invention for the contest portion of the Challenge, which will award prizes in four age categories to the inventions demonstrating the most originality, usefulness, and creativity of design and presentation."

8 Ways to Help Older Kids Develop a Sense of Imagination - MindShift

8 Ways to Help Older Kids Develop a Sense of Imagination - MindShift | iEduc | Scoop.it
Imagination might be vital to a clear mind, but it’s not something that’s widely taught or understood, especially among older students. In a 2007 study of prospective teachers, 68 percent said they believed students needed to focus on memorizing the right answer rather than thinking imaginatively. In his improbably popular TED talk on creativity and schools, Sir Ken Robinson said that humans are born with creativity and “we get educated out of it.” Jenny Smith, who graduated from Millburn High School in 2013, said that her secondary school focused singularly on academic benchmarks. “No one really cared about trying to develop our imaginations,” she said. “There was a curriculum, and they stuck to it.”

Adobe Announces Major Education Initiative with Free Services for Students Worldwide

Adobe Announces Major Education Initiative with Free Services for Students Worldwide | iEduc | Scoop.it

"Adobe...announced changes to improve accessibility and foster creative problem solving curricula for students and education institutions. First, Adobe Spark, a fun and frictionless creative storytelling application, will be made free to every student globally. And for the first time, all students—including those under 13—can access Creative Cloud both on their school and home devices with the same easy-to-use log-in credentials. Educators can also now choose from more than 20 free collaborative courses taught by their peers, explore other professional resources and discover a community of 450,000 creative educators who are ready to share best practices and help boost creative problem solving and digital literacy.“There is a clear gap between what educators and policymakers know tomorrow’s workforce needs, and what today’s students are learning in school,” said Tacy Trowbridge, global lead, Education Programs, Adobe. “Educators, policymakers and industry—technology in particular—need to come together to improve opportunities for students. Creative technologies can help educators teach and nurture critically important ‘soft’ skills, and policies and curricula need to evolve to complete the equation.”Adobe’s New Education Offerings to Help Nurture Creative Problem Solving Skills"To help foster the teaching of creative problem solving and improve accessibility for education institutions to its creative tools and services, Adobe announced three new Creative Cloud and Spark offerings, starting in April 2018:"Spark Premium, regularly valued at $120/year, will be available to all schools and universities at no cost in April. Spark is a storytelling service for use across web and mobile, and is regularly used by teachers to help students build their storytelling skills and improve their confidence in their own creative abilities.

"For the first time, students under the age of 13 can be granted access to Creative Cloud services, consistent with U.S. children’s privacy regulations. Please visit here for more details about COPPA.

"New School I.D. integration offers single sign-on, enabling students to use their school identification to log into Creative Cloud apps at school or at home. This gives students the freedom they need to create, discover and learn outside of the classroom."

Jim Lerman's insight:

I don't normally scoop from press releases, but this strikes me as quite an important commitment by Adobe, providing great tools to students, globally, without cost to them.
