Vocaroo | Online voice recorder

Vocaroo | Online voice recorder | Ideas for language teachers | Scoop.it
Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.
David Young's insight:

This is a great way to capture oral language production in class.  Just have students record one another while practicing a dialogue or having a conversation, and then they can email the recording right away to themselves and the teacher for self-assessment and for a digital accounting of oral progress.

Google Translate

Google's free online language translation service instantly translates text and web pages.
David Young's insight:

This service seems to be the bane of many language teacher's existence, as students gain access to decent translations from their maternal language to the target language.  But what if we made it our tool for thinking and exploration?  I discovered the phasebook, which you could have students use every time they look up something on Google Translate.  Throughout the school year, that phrasebook might grow large, and you can have the students create a spreadsheet of the words.  (This is done automatically for you at the touch of a buttton).  Then you could have the students send you those words and you could hold students accountable to the information that they are gathering from Google Translate, or even make an assignment for students to develop their own vocabulary or phrase lists based on their own interests or needs.  Let's make this powerful service our tool for creating inquiry-based assignments!

Google Voice - One phone number, online voicemail, and enhanced call features

Google Voice - One phone number, online voicemail, and enhanced call features | Ideas for language teachers | Scoop.it
Google Voice gives you one number for all your phones, voicemail as easy as email, free US long distance, low rates on international calls, and many calling features like transcripts, call blocking, call screening, conference calling, SMS, and more.
David Young's insight:

I have used Google Voice as a place to collect student oral responses to questions in Spanish.  I just have them call the Google Voice number, and make a new voicemail message that is a question in Spanish.  When students call, they hear my voice asking them a question, and they have to respond to it in Spanish.  Then you have an audio portfolio online of student oral practice that you can even email back to them for self-assessment!
