There is a new digital divide on the horizon. It is not based around who has devices and who does not, but instead the new digital divide will be based around students who know how to effectively find and curate information and those who do not.

"Systems theory, communications theory, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, computer science – these fields, many of them emerging well before electronic computers, helped create the “information revolution.”

The abstraction of information has made possible massively complex bureaucracies and technologies, from telegraph and telephone networks to NASDAQ and Facebook."

"Even in Athens 2,500 years ago, a lecturer, seeking to keep his students’ attention, may have made a witty comment about the summer heat. But in the 21st century, teachers have more tools than ever before to entertain their students and teach them valuable lessons in the classroom."

Connecting to Connectivism - Learning Theory and Educational Technology

Connecting to Connectivism - Learning Theory and Educational Technology | ICT tools for the happy teacher | Scoop.it

Liz McKnight and Rita Repp
Boise State University

April 2009

Abstract

In today’s hyper-connected world of education, learning theories have become a part of any discussion of what learning should and will look like for the technologically adept students. This paper explores the origin of the connectivism theory. Introduced to the education community in 2004 by George Siemens and Steven Downes, Connectivism is compared to traditional, learning theories. Current theories are identified and their limitations are explored. A brief description of the learning theories from which connectivism evolved is given along with the eight leading principles of the theory. A brief overview of what education might, could, and possibly should be; given modern students' absolute need to function in an environment centered around the constant connectivity of the internet..
