'Dull' computer classes beefed up

'Dull' computer classes beefed up | ICT Teaching and Learning for the future | Scoop.it
The current information and communications technology (ICT) curriculum in England's schools is a "mess" and must be radically revamped, the education secretary has announced.

That's completely fine by me.  I've been saying this for a long time.  Teaching in the Isle of Man gives a lot more freedom to ICT teachers as we are not bound by the curriculum quite as much.  Our KS3 modules and SoW cover topics such as animation, 2D design, 3D design, designing for the web, movie creation.   The work is still marked to the levels dictated by the NC.

What I didn't really appreciate from this news report is the bad name ICT teachers are given.  It's not REALLY our fault that lessons are dull when the content is dull.  There is only so much fun you can squeeze out of what we are given to work with!

What do other ICT teachers think?

BBC NEWS | Click!

BBC NEWS | Click! | ICT Teaching and Learning for the future | Scoop.it

I had to include this as I feel it's invaluable in a classroom for several reasons, including (in no particular order)

* Let students know what's REALLY happening out there in the real world of ICT (great towards the end of KS3 when students are almost completely convinced that ICT = making one or more of: presentation, word processed doc, spreadsheet, scratch animation)

* Stop ICT lessons from becoming boring

* A good go-to resource if a lesson completely flops!

I wrote a scheme of work based entirely around a few episodes of BBC Click!  The only problem I have now (and it's quite a major one) is that the episodes are only available for a certain length of time!  So, I can no longer show the associated episodes :-(

Having said that, after a few months, a typical episode will be seen as reporting on outdated technology!

Anyway, well done BBC; I think Click! is brilliant.

PS. And also because I miss Tomorrow's World!

14 Free and Simple Digital Media Tools

14 Free and Simple Digital Media Tools | ICT Teaching and Learning for the future | Scoop.it

Worth a look.  I'm particularly interested as I'm constantly looking for: -

1) Free ICT tools (To provide variety and allow students to actively select the most appropriate software for a given task)

2) Web-based apps (because not installing program after program onto school PCs means more free HDD space and reducing the chance of PCs stuffed full of redundant software)

I'm not saying I agree, but online collaboration is BIG in ICT and local authorities seem adamant to keep them out.  I'm always looking for alternatives, and so far have tried wikispaces without any major success and also ThinkQuest (thinkquest.org), which has been pretty successful.
