So you think you love reading?

Just watch this incredible story and you just may find yourself in awe of someone who "really likes to read."

In the end, I couldn't help but wonder whether stories like this one go a long way to deflating the ludicrous pseudo-argument between those who believe paper-based reading is superior to digital reading.

It's the words; not the way we access them that ought to be our focus. What we prefer as a reading medium should have nothing to do with our efforts to engage more of our students in life-long reading.

In fact if we mention a preference one way or the other, we're inevitetably doing a disservice to our students. We're certain to annoy those whose preference is "the other." So, what good does the conversation do? If we take a stand in favor of paper and even indirectly imply that digital just isn't the same; a large percentage of our students will roll their eyes and fix an opinion in their minds that we are just old folks who think we do, but don't really live in the 21st century. And, if we take the side of digital then we risk annoying those students who just love sitting in a favorite chair in front of a fireplace smelling the paper before they put the books back on their bookshelves; a visual presence of what they may love more than we can hope for.

And who knows, given the content of this TED Talk, we may not know which of our students has more than just a preference for digital, and perhaps even a dependence upon digital technologies. I'm not just thinking about the blind students who are obvious, but also about the ADHD students, the ESL students, and even the dyslexic students who can not easily engage in either text medium, but who engage more easily with original text via various audio technologies.

Be moved by this TED Talk. And be inspired by the possibilities.
