Open Access Nairobi | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

The Open Access movement appears to be gaining ground, with the oldest and largest university in Kenya, the University of Nairobi, having adopted an Open Access policy in December 2012. The need for change had been heavily emphasised by researchers who concluded that an Open Access policy would allow them the opportunity and platform to promote their academic work and enhance the visibility and impact of their research through a public archive of all scholarly materials. But what other benefits will the University gain through this Open Access policy, and why is this so significant?

This paper addresses parts of my doctoral study exploring how engagement in a museum-school synergy influenced pupils’ multimodal awareness and meaning making as well as increased their critical thinking and enhanced their literacy repertoires, through relevant cultural practice and participation based on a Museum-based Multiliteracies Practice framework.

Findings indicate that addressing museum-based multiliteracies can lead the way towards ubiquitous learning.

Feel free to share if this sounds of interest.

Short abstract

Currently, dramatic changes take place in terms of rapidly emerging modes of communication, technologies, increased cultural diversity, evolving workplaces cultures, new challenges for equitable education and the varying and changing identities of students everywhere. Bearing this in mind, this article draws on a design-based research study to argue of the need for museums to respond to global trends and fulfill their social and educational imperatives by investigating the potential of a particular pedagogical framework that is grounded in culturally inclusive pedagogical practices and characteristics of ubiquitous learning.

Digital learning: Education and skills in the digital age

Digital learning: Education and skills in the digital age | ICT for Education and Development | Scoop.it

The report gives an overview of an expert consultation on the role and future of education and skills in the digital world. It looks at which skills are important and necessary to undertake the different types of jobs available, and what skills we need to be thinking about now and in the future. It explores how we ensure that people are not left out of the digital age and have access to education in digital skills. It looks at how we think about formal education and how our thinking needs to evolve with the increasing adoption of digital tools and technologies, particularly among the younger generation. The report proposes a preliminary framework to ensure an inclusive education in an increasingly digital world and suggests roles for different stakeholders to ensure that this becomes a reality. The consultation highlighted the important role of government and industry in encouraging the greater use of digital technologies in learning. However, it also recognizes that the future should not be driven by technology. The report notes that the role of the educator is not diminished by the increased adoption of digital technologies, with it being seen as an effective tool to make learning more adaptive and flexible.

Une approche intéressante pour les portfolios au cours.
Viviana Echeverry's curator insight, November 13, 11:22 PM
At this time, blogging assists students to become more ICT literate which is a crucial 21st century skill. Through blogging, we’re able to incidentally discuss many ICT skills such as keyboard shortcuts, Creative Commons, researching online and troubleshooting. Creating a class blog requires teamwork and collaboration. Students and teachers learn and share together. A real sense of classroom community can be developed through blogging and establishing a class identity Also, with this we can create an authentic audience, In the traditional classroom, the only audience of student work was the teacher and sometimes classmates and parents. Blogs provide a much larger audience for student work and an opportunity for feedback and self-improvement through commenting. I have found that students really take pride in the work that goes on the blog and want to do their best for their impending audience. In fact, is important to take into a consideration that the use of a blog increased motivation for writing, all students are happy to write and complete aspects of the post topic. Many will add to it in their own time. As well, improved the reading skill. Blogging is a great technique to introduce the technology into the classroom. Additionally, there are so many online tools out there which have more assessment when you can implant them in a blog. Blogging can provide a really different learning stage and while it takes a lot of work.
