With Z Systems Refresh, IBM Reminds Us That Mainframes Remain Relevant

With Z Systems Refresh, IBM Reminds Us That Mainframes Remain Relevant | IBM Digest for Downstream IT LT | Scoop.it

IBM introduced its latest round of mainframes this week.  Who cares, you ask?  Maybe you should. The mainframe has been declared dead a thousand times already, and yet it keeps on keeping on.  While Google has proven a point about the power of scale-out computing — quantities of cheap servers internetworked to share tasks — there are some types of computing that just plain work better on Big Iron. Mainframes are good at tasks like transaction processing, which has performance needs well beyond what scale-out computing can deliver.  That’s why the largest companies — like Visa — entrust their most voluminous computing to mainframes. The new system — called IBM z13 runs the fastest processor in the world , and can process more than 32,000 transactions per second.  The z System’s architectural revisions address directly three areas of increased importance: mobile data, analytics, and cloud infrastructure.

Robert Wilkinson's insight:

If you are interested in learning more about the brand new generation of IBM z Systems, specifically designed for digital business, please join us on Jan 27th at the May Fair Hotel, London.
