I spent a lot of time with curricula and a rubric template I designed. Even after I had prepared a rubric, it was a living document to be worked on each time I used it. It was hard work, but worthwhile as I learned curricula and experienced it differently.

All Hands On Deck: Getting Kids Excited About STEM

All Hands On Deck: Getting Kids Excited About STEM | Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics | Scoop.it
Most American high school students aren’t leaning toward careers in math or science -- actually, they’re leaning away. While higher education will need to address reasons kids drop out of math and science majors, professionals in the STEM fields are stepping forward hoping to get younger kids excited enough to stay.
Melissa Tothero's insight:

“We are not aiming to teach them any particular skills. To get kids excited, you need to introduce them to somebody who is excited already and can convey that excitement.”

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia

STEM and Writing: A Super Combination - Edutopia | Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics | Scoop.it

"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."

Melissa Tothero's insight:

I have had great success for 5 years with a program where I have trained 2nd-6th grade students to be technology assistants for their teachers in class. They learned to say, "I know how to fix that. Would you like for me to help you?"  It is so empowering for the students and helpful for the teachers!  HUGE  WIN-WIN!
