In my opinion one of main factors that influence the development of a society is  they way it uses technology. Under the current efforts of shifting the impact that our societies have on our planet, scientifics, engineers  and designers have joined forces in the development of hybrid technology. The revolutionary design and the fuel efficiency of this ship marks the  introduction of hybrid technology in the transportation by ocean. Hopefuly the returns on fuel cost savings will inspire the production in large scale of means of transportation that use Eco friendly technology.

This is very interesting. I know we are moving into the hybrid industry for vehicle manufacturing and it is great to find out about similar technological advances in other areas. If this works well i can imagine hybrid airplanes would follow.

The skins are a composite of structural foam and Mylar. This is modelled in Abaqus using a composite layup. Tension was applied to the Mylar layer by applying a temperature predefined field and including an expansion (contraction) step

We were very pleased that this worked well! It will enable us (in the detailed design phase) to optimise the wing skins to give a good balance between weight and rigidity. We will be able to play around with the foam density, thickness, Mylar weight and tension to minimise the distortion of the aerofoil under local aero loading, whilst saving on weight

Offshore wind farms and tidal energy facilities harness the power of the wind and the ocean – but why should we have separate turbines for each task? Offshore technology company Mitsui is developing a hybrid wind-current power generating system that combines a floating vertical-axis wind turbine with an underwater turbine that generates power from ocean currents. The clever apparatus would cut down on material waste, and it could produce twice as much energy as a conventional wind turbine

Renewable energy developers strive for improved efficiency in the solar, wind and hydro power industries – and the hybrid wind-current system effectively doubles the efficiency of a typical wind or ocean current turbine. Mitsui Ocean Development & Engineering Company says the system will provide cost-effective power generation while having very little impact on the environment.

The turbines will be large in scale; according to NHK News, the wind turbine will be 47 meters (154 feet), and the underwater portion will have a diameter of 15 meters (49 feet). The turbines will be tested off the coast of Japan later this year. If they work as well as advertised, each turbine could generate enough energy to power 300 households.
