Gesture Based Human Computer Interaction

A demo showing the capabilities of the hand gesture based Human - Computer interaction project that I and my team mates developed as a part of the final year...
NickGardiner's insight:

An example of how human-computer interaction is evolving. We have relied on wired and wireless mouses as well as touch-pads on our computing devices for many years, are they about to become redundant? Will consumers soon be able to use technology that can use your hand as a mouse and your fingers as mouse buttons?

Hand gesture recognition is one of the main areas in which HCI will develop in the coming years. This video provides an example of how this technology can be used.

Microsoft's Concept of How 2019 Will Look Like - Official Video - YouTube

What do you think the world will look like in 2019? Predicting future trends is usually done poorly by Analysts so company's seem to want to give consumer a ...
NickGardiner's insight:

A very, very interesting video that shares Microsoft's opinion on what the future will look like. In this idealized future advances in the development of human-computer interaction technologies are one of the prime focuses of this video. In this video we can clearly see that touch screen technologies and hand gesture recognition are some of the elements envisioned for the future of HCI. Another interesting advance was in natural language processing producing responses that are sensible and fluent to the applicable language.  When watching this video it is very easy to forget the primitive tools of the past invented only a 4 or 5 decades earlier.

This video is a prediction of what the futuristic year 2019 will be like and has predicted several advancements in HCI.

... understand and replicate actual body movements. Programming a computer to accurately identify hand gestures is particularly challenging because of the speed, complexity and dexterity of human hand movements.
NickGardiner's insight:

Reflecting on some of the current issues faced with hand gesture recognition software, the article discusses a newer and more efficient version of the technology that is being developed. The processing software currently used in devices such as Microsoft's Kinect console is expensive and at times inaccurate, especially in hand pose estimation. Researchers at the Bioinformatics institute in Singapore believe they may have found a more efficient and cheaper solution for handling these interactions.

Hand gesture recognition software is one of the areas in which HCI is advancing.

Human-Computer Interface Design

Because human-computer interaction studies a human and a machine in conjunction, it draws from supporting knowledge on both the machine and the human side. O...
NickGardiner's insight:

An interesting introduction about human computer interaction also more commonly referred to as 'User Interface Design' and how some user interfaces operate on some devices today. Particularly how we have become familiar with the operation of certain user interfaces and how we are able to apply previous knowledge to help us interact. The video also briefly, but importantly reflects that in order for humans and computers to communicate effectively there needs to be an understanding on both sides.

This video is useful in gaining a basic understanding of what human computer interaction is and how it works.

Google Working Feverishly To Place RFID Microchip In Your Brain - Now The End Begins

Google Working Feverishly To Place RFID Microchip In Your Brain - Now The End Begins | Humans to Computers: The Information Interchange | Scoop.it
Google says that the the goal is to insert a chip inside your head for the most effortless search engine imaginable.
NickGardiner's insight:

A most interesting idea, in which google has been attempting to invent a device that will be able to effectively display search content - inside a pair of glasses! All you have to do is spit out a phrase and the software will reply and find the most relevant information possible, providing a written and auditory response. The software is still partially flawed and faces the problems that all NLP systems face - they require or expect exact, precise and unambiguous information and will not work properly otherwise.

Natural Language Processing technologies are an important part of HCI in helping software and machines to better understand and meet their users needs. A revolutionary new interface has been proposed that will allow humans and computers to interact in ways most people never could have imagined.
