Michelle Robinson and Change Alberta

Michelle Robinson and Change Alberta  | Human Rights & Civil Rights & Animal Rights & Global Rights | Scoop.it
Manmeet Bhullar, rest in peace, ran this portfolio at one point and made some changes that were positive. Velvet Martin, who's activism created Samantha's Law, is a woman who every single Albertan should be grateful for and Velvet is now working at getting Samantha's Law national.

The Wildrose Party has not released a shadow budget to show how they would change the system and they are on record for saying they didn't get into politics for social issues. They are nothing but playing politics here at the expensive of the truth and certainly didn't go after Jim Prentice, rest in peace, or his successors like this.

The upsetting part for me when people in politics play politics on this issue, they miss the point. There are 7 Alberta reports over the 8 years on reform and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action start with changes to the child welfare system really making it 8 reports in 8 years that not much work has really been done.

Serenity is now a murdered Indigenous girl. She is not included in the numbers of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two Spirit (MMIWG2S.) People need to understand how many numbers there are for missing and murdered Indigenous that are not really accounted for and child welfare is an area people don't know about where children are regularly killed within.

We need people to advocate for these changes and support government when they make changes in this area.

Rest in peace Samantha Martin, Serenity and the countless amount of children that have died in care.
- Michelle Robinson

Change Alberta:  Thanks Michelle. Samantha's Law, for readers unaware of it, is an Alberta law that provides for government funding for "families with children with special needs as legally distinct from children in protective services under the intervention model." Its purpose is to provide families with necessary medical and social supports so that they don't have to relinquish guardianship for their children to get those supports. It's milestone legislation that needs to be more broadly interpreted than is currently the case. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disoarder (FASD) is under-diagnosed and children with FASD are often taken from birth-family and adoptive homes into guardianship with no real expert management of this form of brain damage. There needs to be a great deal of involvement of families, communities, and the social work, psychology and psychiatric professions in changing the system so that more families and extended families get help in their homes and that foster families, kin or otherwise, are not left on their own to deal with children with complicated issues. What we need from politicians of all parties is a willingness to work together and spend whatever is needed rather than allowing children to be political footballs.
