Why Are Schools So Bad At Preparing Students For Modern Jobs? | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing #DigitalSkills #eSkills

Why Are Schools So Bad At Preparing Students For Modern Jobs? | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing #DigitalSkills #eSkills  | Achievement gaps and educational equality: Human resources training development | Scoop.it

If schools are supposed to be training the workers of the future, the growing consensus is that most of them are not doing a very good job of it.

In a trend that seems long overdue, technology-based companies are increasingly turning inward to bridge the gap between the skills they need employees have and the skills they’re actually graduating from college with.

In 8 Critical Skills For A Modern Education, we offered one view of what ‘modern workplace’ skills might look like, and have argued many times that true ’21st-century learning’ should change what work looks like all together.

(Nevermind that, in our estimation anyway, the purpose of school is not job training.)

Still, companies (for now, anyway) need human workers with certain skills that, increasingly, they just don’t have. It’s nearly 2018, and the concept of 21st-century skills is more than two decades old now.

We focus on preparing children for jobs in ways that do injustice to their learning and our teaching. The future and change are continuous and unpredictable. Would we not be better served to follow John Dewey's advice and teach children where they are, allowing them to grow and be ready for more growthy.

How Lifelong Learning and a Growth Mindset Can Propel Your Career

Many people believe once they’ve earned all the degrees needed for their dream job, their learning days are over. This is a dangerous way to manage a career, because technologies and business models emerge and force change so rapidly.
The pace of change is accelerating, and to succeed in any industry, and to be ready to participate in the next evolution of it, professionals must adopt habits and practices that empower lifelong learning.

One challenge to lifelong learning is that many people assume they are not capable of it or not good at it. We tell ourselves, I’m not a math person. I don’t get code. Writing is not my strong suit. Remarks like this may mask a feeling that learning itself is beyond our grasp.

Lifelong learning never happens without a healthy dose of personal grit. A short, but powerful word, grit means persevering in the face of challenges and adversity. Gritty individuals are motivated to overcome those obstacles — whether in their personal or professional lives.

Why Empathy Holds the Key to Transforming 21st Century Learning | #EQ #SoftSkills

Why Empathy Holds the Key to Transforming 21st Century Learning | #EQ #SoftSkills | Achievement gaps and educational equality: Human resources training development | Scoop.it
Like other aspects of modern life, education can make the head hurt. So many outcomes, so much important work to do, so many solutions and strategies, so many variations on teaching, so many different kinds of students with so many different needs, so many unknowns in preparing for 21st Century life and the endless list of jobs that haven’t been invented.

What if we discovered one unifying factor that brought all of this confusion under one roof and gave us a coherent sense of how to stimulate the intellect, teach children to engage in collaborative problem solving and creative challenge, and foster social-emotional balance and stability—one factor that, if we got right, would change the equation for learning in the same way that confirming the existence of a fundamental particle informs a grand theory of the universe?

That factor exists: It’s called empathy.
