How to get pregnancy
Tick tock, tick tock is that your biological clock we hear ticking? If you've decided that now is the right to to conceive, these steps will help maximize your chances of getting on the fast track to pregnancy.
1. Know Your Cycle
To be proactive in getting pregnant, you need to know your cycle. Estimate when you ovulate accurately by tracking your basal body temperature (BBT). Take your temperature each morning with a basal body thermometer, which you can purchase at your local drug store.
It's best to take your temperature around the same time every day before you get out of bed, go to the bathroom, brush your teeth, or eat or drink. Body temperature rises after ovulation, and remains higher until you start your period. Tracking BBT for a few months will help you pinpoint the average length of your cycle and give you a good idea of when you ovulate.
2. Use an Ovulation Predictor Kit
In addition to tracking your BBT, if you want to know exactly when you're going to ovulate, break out the ovulation predictor kit.
Based on your BBT chart, begin using the kit five days before you think you're going to ovulate. When you get a positive reading, that's the time to start having sex, because, while sperm lives for five days, the egg only lives for 36 hours. And, says Dr. Binkley, there's no need to spend a lot of money on a kit, an inexpensive one will work fine.
3. Have Sex Three Days Before You Ovulate
If you can time it right, the best time to try to conceive is before your body releases the egg to be fertilized, says Dr. Shelley Binkley, an OB-GYN with Copper Canyon Women's Center.
"Research shows peak pregnancy rates are when people have intercourse three days before the release of the egg," she says. The beginning of the cycle can vary, but menstruation always starts 14 days after ovulation, so if you subtract 14 days from the average days of your cycle, that's when you generally ovulate.
