“The prospects of becoming an astronaut through the traditional route, through space agencies, are slim,” says Brian Shiro, chief executive of A4H and a geophysicist at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. “The opportunities are probably better in the commercial sector.”

Everyone everywhere is thinking about NASA today with the passing of Neil Armstrong, even my friend Aleah, who was born in my US Peace Corps site, Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Republic of the Philippines and who is exploring new horizons today via her humanitarian work in the Philippines and via her travel blog, the Solitary Wanderer https://www.facebook.com/TheSolitaryWanderer

Your wanderings connect so many others that they never really are solitary! And, you connect with my past in Tandag to its present in your exploits, well, that touches and resonates within me so very, very deeply. Our friendship indeed connects my past and my future so seamlessly. Your friendship is a true treasure for me. Salamat!

I was 17 when I met Eugene Cernan, the pilot of Apollo 10 and commander of Apollo 17, who encouraged me to pursue my dreams of the outer space.

I'm too old now, to believe I could ever walk in space, but Armstrong and the other astronauts (including my friend Rick's classmate, Dr. David Wolfe) continue to inspire me to reach for my dreams.

RIP Neil Armstrong!"

‎Rick wow, really? I only met one, Eugene Cernan, when he came here in the Philippines. Too bad I didn't meet Armstrong. Your classmate had been to space. So envious
