A Different Perspective

Technology has definitely affected the way teachers teach and students learn in the classroom. After interviewing Ms. Cerussi, I have seen that from a much clearer perspective. Ms. Cerussi has taught at Loyola from 1999 to 2014 and has seen many changes due to technology. In her day-to-day experience teaching in the 21st century, Ms. Cerussi watches the students interact and believes that they interact with each other much more than prior to technology. She supports the new sources of technology "in theory." She does think that the teachers need to be trained more to use the iPads. She does face obstacles in her career because of technology. She believes that one obstacle is that as the years have progressed, students work less. She sees a big change in what she does in that the class is much more interactive. She does not believe that iPads have replaced the teacher but are a tool for learning, just like pens and pencils are. The students need to do research using the iPad in order to find what they are looking for. She believes that the teacher will evolve in that a flipped classroom will be created. This means that instead of the teacher teaching directly to the students, the students have to learn themselves at home and then explain what they learned with the class the next day. Overall, Ms. Cerussi supports the new sources of technology but to a certain limit. It has been fun interviewing Ms. Cerussi and interesting hearing her insight. She had a strong opinion and a very interesting perspective.

Thirty years ago, if a child was to be asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, a common response would be, "a model," or a "doctor," or a "football star."  Now, however, the common answer is a teacher.  The role of an educator has evolved over the past few decades, for many reasons.  One big factor is technology.  Teachers have become more devoted to their job now that new technological devices are being invented and used in learning environments. The way students learn has changed as well.  Kids now know so much because of social media and different sites.  It is therefore hard to keep them focused.  Teachers have to learn more about technology so that they can help teach the students in a way that is most effective.  Teachers now have been taught differently when they were kids.  Technology and new devices have made a strong impact on teaching methods and education altogether.

This is a very true article. I think if you asked one of us five years ago we would have said we wanted to be a model or actor but now teaching is becoming a huge demand as a job. And technology is definitely to thank. It is way easier now to be a teacher than it was thirty years ago. We have iPads and tablets and computers that help us easily find information. It is a less work-demanding job compared to just knowing your facts about technology. And in today's world, young adults searching for jobs know a lot about technology because of smart phones and the new grossing gadgets. It has become an easier work load which calls more people to the job.

The more students are exposed to technology and use it in their daily learning, the more confident they seem to become.  Technology transforms students from bystanders to active learners in the classrooms.  Technology has also changed the traditional role of a teacher, because students now are able to control their own learning.  Therefore, teachers have more freedom and space.  They are allowed more time to help people who need attention.  Individual devices have helped students to retrieve answers quickly and think for themselves more.  Teachers know the effects that technology has had on their students and learning environments, and they want to encourage them.  They do not, however, possess the resources, such as connection and digital technology.  Before devices such as iPads were invented, teachers were more facilitators.  They had more control over the students.  Now that iPads have been designed, however, teachers have become more of encouragers.  They help the students when needed, but they give the students more of the control.  The way children and workers are educated has changed because technology, good leadership skills, and strong educators are being combined.  That is how change is made.  Change is not made through the actual device itself but through what we do with the devices.  As more and more changes in technology are being made, teachers are becoming more useful.  They are helping to make the next generation of great leaders.

Learning 2030: Without Teachers

Technological advances have brought many changes to the education system. Will the internet create conditions that allow for increased learning to take place...

Is it true that new changes in technology and advances have changed the way educators teach?  Are there any problems that come along with it?  Absolutely.  The internet has created ways that support increased learning, not just in the classroom but also outside.  Students are able to design their own learning through the process called "The Independent Process."  Because of technology, education comes at a lower cost.  There are problems, however, with this new way of learning.  For example, children are given more freedom when they learn.  That can be both a good and bad aspect.  It can be good because children can experiment more and understand different concepts better than they would otherwise.  It can be bad because they will lose their focus.  Everything will be coming at them at once from different directions.  Social media will distract them and therefore make it hard for them to concentrate.  For the most part, teachers support these new advances in technology.  They do have their doubts about it, however.  Overall,, technology has impacted education and changed teaching for the better.

The traditional role of a teacher has changed since four or five years ago.  As changes in technology are being made, teaching changes also.  Math teacher Steve Paikin has experienced big changes in his career over the past few years.  He used to teach with a marker and a board, directing the lesson and answering questions.  He would have total control over his students.  Now, however, he feels like more of an encourager rather than a facilitator.  Paikin supports technology and believes it made his career easier.  During his interview, he remarked upon the fact that what seemed like normal culture a few years ago can be historical artifacts tomorrow.  As iPads are being invented, teachers are experimenting with them and do not use textbooks anymore.  Paikin explained how a librarian at a library near his house said that textbooks are going to become historical objects in museums.  They will evidence showing how human culture has changed over time.  Overall, like Ms. Cupillari, Steve Paikin supports technology and believes that it has been beneficial to his career.

Sneek Peek: Interview with a teacher

Over the past few years, the traditional role of a teacher has evolved drastically as the World evolved.  New changes in technology have made it both easier and harder to teach in different ways.  One particular teaching field that has been especially affected is mathematics.  Ms. Cupillari has been involved in teaching Math for many years.  She has taught at both Regis and Loyola.  While she was applying for a job, she visited schools that were neither Catholic nor private, and "it did not seem right."  She likes Regis and Loyola, however, because they are Catholic.  She likes that it is religious and she feels like she can talk freely about justice and faith.  She is very supportive of the idea that Loyola is very good at pushing the students beyond their limits and motivating them to be their best selves.  She feels that technology is beneficial in this way.  According to Ms. Cupillari, technology has changed her role as a Math teacher more.  She likes using the iPad and uses it more frequently in her Math job.  She feels like the iPad helps her to stay on top of everything and contact her colleagues easily.  She loves the smart board because she feels like it is easier to teach with.  She is nervous because she learned that smart boards are not going to exist anymore.  She feels that the iPad saves time.  She says that the graphing calculator app is convenient and supplemental.  One app that she likes to use is “Showbie.”  Overall, Ms. Cupillari is a big supporter of technology and feels like it helped her immensely in her career.
