Tasha Berry's insight:

Today social media is growing at such a rapid pace, but have you ever really thought about how social media impacts our lives? Most if not all of us can't go a day without using some type of social media, whether it's on our phones or on our computers. In the world we live in today, social media is not only a place to "tweet" your friends, "like" pictures, and "post statuses" it's a place where people can stay updated on current events and stay connected.

My topic was how is social media impacting our lives today, and I find it to be important because social media is a big part of most of our lives. We may think that we only spend a little bit of time on social media, but in reality we spend a big portion of our time on social media sites. Like everything else in this world there are positives and negatives to social media. Too much of it isn't good, that's why I think if we use it in moderation then it's okay.

I learned a lot of different things from the sources I found. The fact the social media is hurting bussiness, how revolutions were started because of a social media site like Twitter, how social networking can be looked at as a diary. I never really thought outside the box when it came to social media. I always thought it was just a place for entertainment, not somewhere people could go to actually accompish things like becoming a famous singer (i.e. Justin Bieber). There is that worry from pessimists that social media could harm our health in some way, and maybe it could but because we are really the first generation to have this type of social media in our lives we just don't know if that's true yet. Like I mentioned before everything in moderation is better than abusing something.

This is a pretty broad question, spanning health, economics, and social relations. These are credible sources and interesting articles, but a narrower focus might yield something even more insightful.

Social Media Are Junk Food For Our Brains. Why Are The Nutritionists Silent?

Social Media Are Junk Food For Our Brains. Why Are The Nutritionists Silent? | How big of an impact does social media have on our lives today? | Scoop.it
Requires no prep time. Easy to consume. Fast. Immediately satisfying, yet leaves you wanting more. I could be describing a bag of potato chips or Twitter. Both “feeds” have much in common, and neither experience is necessarily good for you.
Tasha Berry's insight:

With everything in life there is always a positive and a negative outlook. Social media has both, some people are for social media while others oppose it. There are people that believe social media encourages bad grammar because you are restricted to so many characters on certain sites. Others think that using social media for large periods of time can lead people to become anti-social and increased social isolation. Social media is not a bad thing, but too much of it can hurt you. It can hurt your face-to-face relationships with people, it can promote bullying. Social media sites can be addicting; so moderation is key.

The socio-economic impact of social media – The Express Tribune

The economics of this medium make it a convenient tool for abuse.
Tasha Berry's insight:

The rise of social media has caused some trouble for many businesses. For example, the use of the postal service is on decline. Renting movies from places like Blockbuster isn't as popular anymore, now there are things like Netflix and Hulu where people can watch what they want on the interent. Social media also plays a big role in spreading religious and political messages. Social media sites such as twitter played a major role with the rise of the revolutions in countries such as Egypt, Tunisia and more recently Syria. Most of us don't see all the power social networks can have on our world and our society. Without social networking the world as we know it would probably be much different.

Social Media: Examining The Influence Social Networking Has On Our Lives - Social News Daily

Social Media: Examining The Influence Social Networking Has On Our Lives - Social News Daily | How big of an impact does social media have on our lives today? | Scoop.it

Social media influence allows stars to be born, famous people to stay connected with fans, and businesses to market to billions of people on the cheap.

Tasha Berry's insight:

Throughut the last decade social media sites have really taken over. From Facebook and Twitter to Tumbler and Youtube there are so many different social networks out there that are changing the way we live. Social networks have become apart of our daily lives, and it shows through our actions. Most people have smartphones such as an Iphone, and they check their Twitter and Facebook regurarly throughout the day. Without social networks, celebrities such as Justin Bieber and Pitbull may not have been discovered, some bussiness may not have had the oppurtunity to grow, and people such as you and I would not have had the oppurtunity to meet new people.

Are social networking sites good for society?
Tasha Berry's insight:

Today social media sites are used for a variety of different things. More and more people are turning to Twitter for updates on things such as the news. There are many pros and cons to social media sites, some being that social media sites spread information faster than any other media, but the problem with that is it's not always true. As time progresses more and more social media sites are being created, and each one is unique in its own way. A lot of our time is spent on social media sites when we are on the computer, compared to about 20 years ago when barley no social media sites existed. As time evolves the amount of social media sites will increase, and as with everything we do in life there are pros and cons. It's up to us to look at the positives rather than the negatives.

Is Social Networking Killing You?

Is Social Networking Killing You? | How big of an impact does social media have on our lives today? | Scoop.it
While spending time working on your network of friends online might not actually make you sick, two scientists in Britain think you’d be better off stepping away from the screen.
Tasha Berry's insight:

In today's world most of us can't go an hour without checking our phones, and most of us sleep with our phone not to far away from us. For most of us, our phones are the first thing we check when we wake up and the last thing we see before we go to sleep. Is all that time spent on your phone hurting you? In some ways, yes it is. With children adapting to using social networking sites as such a young age, some scientists think it may be harmful to their health and also may be the cause of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. I think that social networking can be used in moderation, but once it's abused that's when it becomes harmful.

Diaries, the original social media: How our obsession with documenting (and sharing) our own lives is nothing new

Diaries, the original social media: How our obsession with documenting (and sharing) our own lives is nothing new | How big of an impact does social media have on our lives today? | Scoop.it
"Twitter is known for three things. It's known for the Arab Spring, it's known for Justin Bieber, and it's known for narcissism."
Tasha Berry's insight:

Before social networks like Facebook and Twitter existed people used to "document" their lives by writing in diaries. Diaries were private whereas all these social networks are public. So why do people post personal tweets or statuses? People find journaling a way of strenghting relationships, and on social netowrks it's a way to create new friendships/relationships. We journal because we hope that when we are gone people in later years will see what life was like when we were living. A really good example of this would be Anne Frank, without her diaries we wouldn't know who she was let alone what her life was like. Even though journaling may have changed throughout the years, at the end of the day it's still journaling.
