Call for EU to immediately ban horse meat from America - News - Horsetalk.co.nz

Humane Society International is calling on European Union officials to protect consumer health and immediately ban the sale of horsemeat coming from North America.
Suzanne's insight:
As an American horse owner, all I can say is that we have been trying for YEARS to get through to the people who are eating some of the over 1,000,000 American horses that are slaughtered every year in Mexico and Canada and exported mostly to the EU. Horses in the US are not considered to be food animals, so their medications and over-the-counter products are not regulated for use in food animals. Some3 70% of horse veterinary products contain banned substances - bute is only one of many. Likewise, many of our non-prescription products also contain substances that are banned for use in food animals and are plainly labeled NOT FOR USE IN HORSES INTENDED FOR FOOD PURPOSES. We use these products freely because NO American horses are "intended" for slaughter. We have absolutely NO traceability system for horses. Detailed records of what they have been exposed to in their lives simply don't exist. So, the "kill buyers"- unscrupulous men who acquire our horses any way the can - theft, purchase under false pretenses, rigged auctions, whatever it takes. Then they ship these completely undocumented horses to mostly EU regulated slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada , having forged any necessary documentation. As the EU has found out in their inspections in 2010, and again 2012. Animals with clean documentation tested positive for banned substances. The EU has promised that, after July 31 of this year, they will no longer accept horses from countries that don't have traceability systems comparable to the passport system. I don't know about Mexico and Canada, but I do know that the US never even submitted a proposed plan to the EU for consideration and have NO plans for implementing ANY kind of traceability system for American horses.Americans do NOT want their horses slaughtered, but they ARE being slaughtered for human consumption by the thousands every year. This continues because where powerful people think there is money to be made, authorities and legislators can be "persuaded" to turn a blind eye on both the cruelty and the food safety issues, and also block legislation that would outlaw the practice for good. As long as there is a market, criminals will find a way.

Horse slaughterhouse opening on hold

Horse slaughterhouse opening on hold | Horse Slaughter | Scoop.it

A state district judge on Monday issued a temporary restraining order to prevent a Roswell horse slaughterhouse from opening this week before a hearing scheduled for Friday.

Suzanne's insight:

This was in response to a lawsuit filed by New Mexico's Attorney General. Hopefully, it will be extended or a preliminary injunction issued.

The "owner" of Valley Meats, Ricardo De Los Santos is a twice convicted felon, has broken just about every rule in the book when he was slaughtering cattle. Was shut down twice by the USDA - once for inhumane handling and once for environmental issues. He does NOT have a waste water discharge permit, and in fact, operated his cattle slauighter plant for years without one after allowing his permit to expire. This is NOT legal.

Something not smell right? PHEW!

A grim future awaits the nation's wild horses

A grim future awaits the nation's wild horses | Horse Slaughter | Scoop.it

Last week, a federal judge in New Mexico cleared the way for domestic slaughterhouse operators to again kill and render horses on American soil.

Appeals in Denver stayed that ruling, at least temporarily, so that it could evaluate whether the Obama Administration unlawfully permitted those operators to resume the brutal practice without first complying with all relevant environmental regulations.

The fight over horse slaughter in America, this latest legal battle reminds us, is decades old and ceaseless. But what is new to the grim equation today, six years after horse slaughter was halted here, is the presence of some 49,000 wild horses in long- and short-term government "holding facilities" in the Midwest and West. Over the past half decade or so, these federally protected horses have been removed from Western rangelands by the Bureau of Land Management, often at the request of ranchers and livestock agents, and placed into "federal custody" at great cost to the American taxpayer. There they now sit, utterly vulnerable to the market forces represented by those slaughterhouses."

Suzanne's insight:

We have known for decades that what the BLM is doing to our wild horses is illegal, but there seems to be no one who is willing to step up and slam the brakes on this runaway agency.

Unless WE can prevent it, the BLM will send all of our remaining wild horses to slaughter for the benefit of extractive industries and the cattlemen who are grazing millions of cattle under the Public Lands Grazing Program, which is many times more costly that the Wild Horse & Burro Program has EVER been - captive horses and all. Besides that, the millions of cattle - an alien and invasive species if there ever was one - are destroying our Public Lands while the BLM blames it on the HORSES!

"You sound like a fucking bitch"

"You sound like a fucking bitch" | Horse Slaughter | Scoop.it

The AP has singlehandedly misinformed the media and the public about the horse slaughter industry's pretension of doing right by horses. Here's what I went through to try and get it to correct its errors."

Suzanne's insight:

This is schocking and a MUST READ even if you are not interested in the horse slaughter issue - although you should be interested, because it affects us all,

The Associated Press and especially on of their reporters, one Jeri Clausing, have continued to report pro-slaughter propaganda even after one of Ms. Clausings favorite sources - that GAO Report - has been proven to be not sloppy researching but outright fraud.

Clausing seems to blame everyone but herself for failing to catch obvious data minipulation when she saw it. You will not believe the way she treats FORBES reporter, Vickery Eckhoff.

The rest of the AP staff contacted by Ms. Eckhoff wasn't much better, refused to acknowledge the errors in every Clausing story and refused to print corrections!

Follow the link here to Vickery's excellent article in FORBES, and then tell the AP that you don't appreciate their flood of errors that ends up all over the main stream media because it comes from then AP. Ask them how you can believe anything that comes from them if they refust to correct obviously incorrect information from Jeri Clausing.

What has happend to journalism in this country?

Equine Essentials: The Problem With Horse Passports

Equine Essentials: The Problem With Horse Passports | Horse Slaughter | Scoop.it
Lets face it; it's like a jungle out there. It's the responsibility of whoever buys or owns the horse to sort out the documentation for the horse, but there isn't a whole lot standards out there. None the less you might find yourself jumping through all kinds of hoops just to get your horse "legal", because you don't want to get slapped with a fine of several thousand pounds.

The horse passport system was introduced to keep bute (phenylbutazone, which is also used to treat humans) out of the human food chain. Micro chipping was introduced as an additional measure of control alongside the passports. The recent food scandals have been more about people being revolted by the idea of eating horse meat more than about the safety of it. The BBC reported the whole issue to be more of a food fraud rather than a food safety issue. The passport system has had plenty of criticism for not functioning properly, not being enforced and being subject to a lot of abuse. In February 2013 the BBC reported that 7 000 unauthorised documents have been circulating in the UK since 2008. Not to mention the fake horse passports that are being made continuously. Owners report that veterinarians often don't use the passport to record care history and many opt for the old way of doing things and issue vaccination cards instead. Many competing grounds are also happy to just see the vaccination card and don't check passports.

The Ulster Society Prevention Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) in Ireland estimates that up to thousands of animals could have disappeared from Ireland in only a few years under false documents. Falsifying passports is too easy as the quality of official, authorised documents varies greatly according to experts. Charlie the little cob was found wandering the streets 11 months after official records stated he had been slaughtered. Despite the evident problems and lack of reliability, officials are reluctant to actually do anything about it.

Suzanne's insight:

Please follow the link to read the entire story about the total ineffectiveness of Equine Passports. Why people continue to ignore facts and continue to eat horse meat is beyond me.

It is NOT about food fraud. It's about food SAFETY!

Horse Slaughter Livestock Auction -- Hey, we want to kill your horse

Horse Slaughter Livestock Auction -- Hey, we want to kill your horse | Horse Slaughter | Scoop.it

Here is a story about the muck and mire and the dirty little secret, that is no secret what so ever. This thing in our civilized society that better left unmentioned, to go unnoticed while we eat our breakfast or dinner. Because it is so blatantly ugly and sickening to think about, especially while eating, that most would become ill and loose their appetite immediately. This is a story about the slaughter of animals, in particular horses.

But this story more than just about the slaughter of horses, it is about people. It is about the people that form an industry to take horse’s to slaughter. In contrast and perception, it is about those special people that want our society and civilization better. It is about change, truth, and living up to what we claim to be in America — A Civilized People.

Suzanne's insight:

This is one of the best and most realistic articles I've ever seen about what REALLY goes on in the heartless world of horse slaughter.

I become absolutely enraged when on of the pro-horse slaughter parasites referrs to what they want to do with our horses as "humane euthanasia." Slaughter is NOT euthanasia! Not by any standards in the world! These greedy SOBs would tell any lie to bring horse slaughter back to American soil.

If you're too faint hearted to be part of the solution, you are a LARGE part of the problem.

There is NO need to send any horse to slaughter! Programs like this are popping up all over the country - hay banks, assistance, free euthanasia, gelding clinics - everything. Ask your vet, extension agent, local authorities or your fellow horse owners.

And the next time some pro-slaughter know-nothing tries to convince you that slaughter is the "only option" tell them that slaughter is "NO" option!

Suzanne's insight:

With Congress about to pass a Budget that will defund USDA inspections of horse slaughter plants AND the EU refusing to accept our horses because we do not have a traceability system with lifetime medical records of our horses starting at the farm level, none of these plants will open, but how much of OUR tax money will be wasted in the meantime? The USDA simply does NOT have the funds to adequately inspect horse slaughter plants and OUR food producers too.

Tell Congress NO on Dangerous King Amendment - The Humane Society of the United States

Tell Congress NO on Dangerous King Amendment - The Humane Society of the United States | Horse Slaughter | Scoop.it
Farm Bill shenanigans threaten millions of animals. Your action is needed today to stop the dangerous King amendment!
Suzanne's insight:

In a disappointing move, the House leadership refused to allow consideration of any animal welfare-related amendments to the Farm Bill on the House floor, but left in the dangerous, overreaching "King amendment." Instead of allowing a fair and open debate on amendments to give more room to egg-laying hens, protect horses from abusive soring, and ending the cruel slaughter of horses to export their meat overseas, the House leadership shut out consideration of these bipartisan popular issues, and instead allowed the King amendment to remain in the Farm Bill. The language in the King amendment is so broad that it could repeal state laws on farm animal confinement, horse slaughter, puppy mills, shark finning, and a wide range of other concerns from food safety to child labor to the environment. To protect these important animal protection laws, Congress must now stop the Farm Bill in its tracks.

TAKE ACTION: This link will take you to the HSUS page where you can find your Rep and send an immediate request that he/she vote NO to the Farm Bill. It's a crappy bill anyway. Please - be SURE to do this!

Kentucky HBPA - News

Kentucky HBPA - News | Horse Slaughter | Scoop.it

A handful of positive tests for a drug that mimics the effects of steroids by building muscle mass have been turning up across the country, and with four cases in Louisiana, the state racing commission has proposed some rule changes to address what it calls an “emerging trend.”

The drug is ractopamine, and it is the active ingredient in “finishing” feed supplements used to bulk up swine in the weeks before they head to the show ring or slaughter. It is not a steroid, but as a repartitioning agent it helps keep nutrients from going into fat stores so as to enhance muscle mass. Ractopamine is approved by the government for use in swine, but not horses.

Suzanne's insight:

This drug, rastopamine, has been in the news recently because, as we see in ths article, our meat producers use it regularly as a "finishing" feed supplement to cattle and pigs to make them "leaner" as they go to market.

Well, it seems that this drug is banned in some other countries - including Russia, and so Russia has banned our meat products because of it.

Now, we are finding the stuff in horses too. Hmmm....

Grand Opening Of Horse Slaughter Plants Foiled Again

Grand Opening Of Horse Slaughter Plants Foiled Again | Horse Slaughter | Scoop.it

The opening of three slaughter facilities looking to butcher horses on U.S. soil hit another roadblock Monday when a federal appeals court issued a temporary injunction prohibiting the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) from inspecting horse slaughter plants. The length of the injunction—issued after a request by Front Range Equine Rescue (FRER), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), and other groups and individuals—was not indicated.

Suzanne's insight:

This is the FORBES article Vickery was referring to in her blog post. The reporting on this issue has been so riddled with errors it's no wonder the general public doesn't know what's actually going on and how it will affect them whether they are aware of the issues surrounding horse slaughter or not.

This is another glaring example of how main stream media is failing us BIG TIME. And refusing to acknowledge errors and correct them. This an issue that we all should tell the media that we are aware of and then say, "We're mad as hell, and we're not going to take it any more!"

Enough already!

Republished from a letter sent to the BLM after Monica was only allotted 3 minutes to make her presentation in a public relations farce of a meeting to supposedly gather public input. The only modifications are formatting for internet publication and one or two spelling corrections, plus the addition of the Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewel's phone numbers should this letter encourage you to call. R. Winkler, Publisher

Suzanne's insight:

Please read this entire presentation from Monika Courtney to the Bureau of Land Management, which in spite of being ordered to use real science to manage our wild horses continues to use the same old illegal and discredited methods they have always used in their compaign to extermanate our horses in the wild.

There are some phone numbers at the end. Please make use of them if you possibly can. Time is truly running out. Even the famous Pryor Mountain herd with their lead stallion. the great Cloud, has just been genetically tested and declared to be on the edege of being too few to be genetically viable. Many less famous herds are in MUCH worse shape.

Overpopulation? Only for those who want them entirely eradicated.

Believe me, it is NOT and anyone who would try to convince horse owners of such a thing is beneath contempt.

UPDATE 1-White House threatens to veto proposed USDA funding bill

WASHINGTON, June 25 (Reuters) - The White House threatenedon Tuesday to veto the agricultural funding bill awaiting debate in the House, saying it would weaken regulation of the futuresmarket and might

weaken regulation of the futures market and might force the furlough of meat inspectors, shutting down meat processing plants.

Suzanne's insight:

Just what we need! More partisan wrangling over the USDA finding bill that would ban funding of horse slaughter plant inspections - just as USDA Sect. Villsack announced the USDA will start granting inspections of prospective horse slaughter plants unless Congress acts. Congress ACT? When did THAT ever happen?

The House was going to start debate on this bill next week, but now has pulled it. The Rules Committee said it would meet and try to get the bill approved for floor action - yeah, by stripping the amendment that prohibits USDA inspections of horse slaughter plants! Exactly the same thing they did to the Farm Bill.

Can't the government do ANYTHING right?

Valley Meat USDA Walk-Through

Valley Meat USDA Walk-Through | Horse Slaughter | Scoop.it
ROSWELL, N.M. - Agents of the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a walk-through of Valley Meat Co. on Tuesday, days after the Humane Society of the United States and Front Range Equine Rescue submitted a notice of intent to sue if the agency agrees to provide inspections required for the facility to slaughter horses.

The walkthrough does not constitute a final determination for Valley Meat, according to attorney Bruce Wagman, a partner at the Schiff Hardin law firm who represents both potential plaintiffs.

"It means they did an inspection of the facility for certain criteria," Wagman said. "It doesn't at all mean that there's an approval of horse slaughter. The walkthrough is part of a chain of events, sort of like saying once you get the nomination that you're actually the president. You may get nominated, but that doesn't mean you're going to win."
