Irish Examiner
What's the right amount of homework?
jhenehan's insight:

I posted this article to my newspaper becasue it just showed how the homework debate is taking places around the world. This article was about homework in Ireland. It was posted in the Irish Examiner. The article was titles Whats the Right amount of homework? A question that many parents and teachers have to ask themselves. The article mentioned that at grade 1st grade they had an hour or so of homework and by grade six they had up to six hours of homework! I totally disagree with having six hours worth of homework. Students are in their classrooms all day and then are expected to go home and not be able to enjoy time with their families and do extracurricular activities, instead they have to sit and do hours worth of homework. I think that this shoud either be done in school or their should be a maximum time that students spend on homework, and that it should be graded on completition not accuracy. This article shows how globally the issue of homework has been on the rise. Should teachers be giving homework? If so, how much? How is homework assigned? All of these questions are questions that as an educator I will have to take into account when having to assign homework. The article mentioned how one parents was happy that the majority of her daughters homework was done in the classroom and they rarely had anything to do at home. I too feel that homework, should be able to be taken care of in the 8 hours the student is at school. What do you think?

Should homework be banned?

Should homework be banned? | Homework in Elementary School | Scoop.it
Say what's on your mind. Display your opinion about whether homework should be banned. Review what others think about the importance of homework.
jhenehan's insight:

This page stood out to me because it is an interesting poll on whether ohomework should be banned or not. I think the reliability of this poll comes from the fact that people are allowed to vote on how they feel about homework. The poll allows people to vote on it. Right now 77% say that it should be banned. The poll also allows people to post about how they feel about homework it was very interesting to me because it shows the debate and discusses different reasons on why to ban or to keep homework. If I had to vote on this measure I would vote to keep homework, but I would limit the amount of homework and the amount of time. I think a child should spend no more than thirty minutes a night on homework when they are in elementary school. How do you feel? Should children have homework? How much? Should all homework be done in school? These are all questions that people have in the homework debate.

Top 14 Reason Why Homework is Important | e-Skool

Top 14 Reason Why Homework is Important | e-Skool | Homework in Elementary School | Scoop.it
jhenehan's insight:

This article gives the top 14 reasons why homework is important. I think that the reasons stated are very accurate. I think homework is important in improvings the childs thinking and memory. It helps the to develop study habits. It helps them manage time. One thing that the article stated was that it helps the child to work independently. I feel that this is sometimes true and sometimes its not true. It goes case by case. Sometimes parents do the childs homework for them. Whats the point of this. The child isnt learning anything from this. So they still arents working independently. Being a teacher you have to keep this in mind. Did the student complete this homework on their own or did they get help on it? Homework does allow the students t practice. I think practice is very important. Espescially in math. You need to practice the formula to understand. I also agree with the article that it informs parents about what their student is learning in school. So, for me there are reasons why homework is important.

Is Homework Necessary? - Education Week News (blog)

Is Homework Necessary?
Education Week News (blog)
In a separate piece, Andrea Townsend, a high school science teacher and parent, defends homework.
jhenehan's insight:

If you are every interested in homework for your children this is an article that might be worth the read. I found this a very reliable source. It comes from education week blog. The article that this article talked about was about a father who said that his daughters homework was killing him. It mentions how one teacher doesnt like giving homework but feels that she has to assign it or people may think that she is not a good teacher? I felt like reading this I kept asking why? Why would she be a bad teacher if she didnt give homework? Is that how society is today. We just assume that a teacher is a good teacher just because they give out homework. This was interesting to me, and pulled me in to create this newspaper. It is neat to see the argument how some people defend having homework and others want to do away with it altogether. Where do you stand? Do you think homework should be banned? Or is it helpful? Interesting to think about as an educator.

All Homework Should Be Banned

All Homework Should Be Banned | Homework in Elementary School | Scoop.it
If a student wishes to review some of the work of the day on their own, great. If the kids have to study for a test or exam -- no problem. But those millions of hours of useless make-work homework assignments?
jhenehan's insight:

Reading this article really jump-started my research on homework. Should homework be banned? Should students not have any homework or should they have some. This article is interesting because it talks about how a seven-year-old girl who used to love homework suddenly tells her mom that she hates school now.  She is required to do an hour and a half of homework every night! She is at school from 7:45 am until 3:45 and doesn’t get off her bus until 5:00 and then has to do another hour and a half of homework. The article talks about how the girl should be able to spend time with her family and do other activities like play outside, sports, socialize. All of these things are important for children. One thing that stood out to me in the article was that, “Good teachers can get the job done in class. Those who can’t just assign more homework.” It’s a very interesting debate.

Educational Leadership:Giving Students Meaningful Work:Five Hallmarks of Good Homework

Educational Leadership:Giving Students Meaningful Work:Five Hallmarks of Good Homework | Homework in Elementary School | Scoop.it
Founded in 1943, ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) is an educational leadership organization dedicated to advancing best practices and policies for the success of each learner.
jhenehan's insight:

The five Hallmarks of Good Homework! why give homework if there isnt.....

1) a purpose

2) efficiency

3) ownership

4) competence

5) aesthetic appeal

I think that all homework should hit all of these key components. The article also mentions that students should be able to admit to their teachers if they dont understand the homework without being penalized..... This brings up another aspect of homework. How it should be graded? Completion or accurancy?  I think completion.

How to Escape Doing Homework!

Jenna shows you how to escape doing homework! Music by Jason Shaw: Happy Little Elves, Intense Suspense, Sneaky Snooper, Pinks Glass.
jhenehan's insight:

This video was interesting to me even though its a little corny because it shows the different ways children escape doing homework. There are so many other things going on that the child could be doing. Especially technology. With the use of iphones, smart phones, ipads, and other technology. There are so many things that a child can do instead of doing homework. Could these things be better for the child than doing homework? Thats the debate. The child in the video clearly is lying about doing her homework. Instead she went to the park to meet some friends. It also brings up another question how closely should parents monitor their childs homework. Here it seems that the parents only care that she says she did her homework. When clearly she did not. How much should parents invest in their childs homework if they do have it? Interesting to think about.
