Ten Projects That Succeeded Despite the Great Depression

Ten Projects That Succeeded Despite the Great Depression | HomeTeam Fundraising | Scoop.it

We help communities and organizations find the resources they need to fund public benefit projects like swimming pools, community centers, hospice homes, etc.

Wall Street and investment bank difficulties should stop Main Street USA from helping to improve communities.

We recently were impressed when we were given a photograph of the grand opening of the swimming pool in Traer, Iowa, in June 1932. This, the first municipal pool in Tama County, was accomplished in the midst of the Great Depression!

Got me to thinking about other things that were accomplished during "this economy" in 1930s USA. Here are 10 of them:

The Empire State Building was completed in 1931.

Construction began on the Hoover Dam in 1931.

Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge started in 1933.

The massive Kingsley Dam that created beautiful Make McConaughy in western Nebraska began in 1936.

The faces on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota were completed between 1934 and 1939.

The Lincoln Tunnel under the Hudson River was built between 1934 and 1937.
New York's La Guardia Airport opened in 1939.

The spectacular Iowa-Des Moines National Bank Building was completed in 1932.

Sioux City's Badgerow Building was completed in 1930.

The massive Upper Mississippi River - Illinois Waterway System of locks and dams was built during the 1930s.

Next time you hear someone talking about why this or that project should be scrapped in light of "this economy," sit them down and enlighten them regarding the vast opportunity ahead.
