No lies, no inventions - poverty in Australia is awfully real

Eleven per cent of Australians live in poverty - seriously. Having written about poverty and homelessness in Australian newspapers for more than a decade, I am constantly intrigued by the number of indignant letters I receive from people who are adamant that what I write is a lie.

The Silence on Poverty Growth in Australia Astounds | Illawarra News

Countless organisations, including Wollongong City Council have hosted forums. Yet I doubt that a single policy has been implemented that will radically effect the lived experience of many of those who are caught in the poverty trap.

From Individual Rights to the Beloved Community: A New Vision of Justice

From Individual Rights to the Beloved Community: A New Vision of Justice | Homelessness in Wollongong | Scoop.it

LIKE A ROSE THAT HAS SPROUTED IN A WEED GARDEN and induced the weeds to back away in awe, the restorative justice movement has entered American legal culture and is posing an important challenge to core assumptions about human beings and about the very nature of human reality that our legal culture has taken for granted for more than two hundred years.

Closing of downtown shelter could put more homeless on the streets - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Closing of downtown shelter could put more homeless on the streets - Atlanta Journal Constitution | Homelessness in Wollongong | Scoop.it

Closing of downtown shelter could put more homeless on the streetsAtlanta Journal ConstitutionBy Steve Visser Midtown boosters, downtown power brokers and Atlanta city officials are close to winning a decade-long battle to close a massive homeless...

1. the subject of the collum is closeing a homeless  shelter in Atlanta

2.Facts given:

     - The city of Atlanta wants to close a shelter that has been open for fifteen years

     - In closing this, it will release the many homeless men in the shelter to the streets, where there is already a documented 2,000 homeless people

-The united Way, the orginazation taking over the  homeless shelter, proposes they can fin homes for the 500 men  in the shelter now, which is laughable.

3. The writer disagrees with the homeless shelter being shut down, not becuase of moral opinions, but the amount of money and lagisticts it will take to close it and take care of the aftermath.

4. The writer doesnt state his opinion directly. I know the opinion because it seemed all the sorces and interveiws he used, showed only the negative effect on closing the shelter.

6. I learned this collumist does not truly care for the homeless. I feel he his acctualy quite apatheitc about them.

7. This article was written for any person living on this side of town in Atlanta.

8. The writer does not make me agree with him, due to my morals and compassion.

2. The writer obviously  uses logos in this collum. He shows all of the  costs and conisquenses in the disision being made. He tells of the outcome of both paths shown, and takes favor in one over the other. The writer also uses slight ethos apeal. In stating the vast numbers of the homeless population and telling their outcome if the shelter would be closed.  He states, the shelter "provides a lifeline for often desperate men."
