Samsung Flexible OLED display Hands-on

If there is one commonality that all high-end smartphones embody, it has to be none other than the fact that they're all simple pieces of slabs at their core -- and nothing more than that! However, every now and then, we are greeted with a kind of device that manages to stray from the tried and true design of today's contemporary smartphones. Even before the first official day of CES kicked off, we were able to check out Samsung's booth during Pepcom's event and witnessed something truly imaginary that makes you wonder about the endless possibilities that can grace future smartphone designs.

4K or oled

4K or oled | Home screens from the future | Scoop.it

4K ou Oled

1. OLED

OLED screens will be in store late 2012, early 2013; the same schedule applies for 4K screens.

Which are the advantages and drawbacks?

We will start by enumerating the advantages of OLED screens and the difference of each technology used by each constructor. Samsung’s OLED screen uses a so called “Multi-view” technology which allows the spectator to follow two distinct programs on the same device with the help of specific 3D glasses with integrated speakers.

LG uses a “4 color pixel” technology. This principle relies on the addition of white pixels for a better color rendering.

These devices have the advantage to be the thinnest screens nowadays; they are twice as thin as the width of an IPhone 4. Moreover, the color rendering brings the image close to reality.

If an image has black areas in it, pixels turn black but still have a luminescent halo around them. Which is not the case with OLED technology: the area is completely black.

The new OLED generationwill also eliminate all borders of a screen which may obstruct the view of the spectator

2. 4K

Today, the most wide spread resolution is 1920x1200px. For professionals screen resolution goes until 2560x1600px. 4K screens even go beyond that: 4096x2160px.

But why do we need that more pixels? The present interest in having such a resolution in our living rooms, besides the more realistic and ultra-thin display is 3D.

The 4K resolution allows a high quality 3D rendering. The two image flows, which the brain needs to interpret a 3D image, are casted simultaneously (instead of alternated) for a far more pleasant rendering.

Major advantages:

-Higher detail level, even more than an OLED screen.

-This format is supported by the major cinema studios; some videos are already available on YouTube

The inconvenience of this technology is the size of it. In order to benefit fully of the 4K technology you will, at least, need a 70inch screen.

3. Pricing

The first OLED screen is estimated at 9000€ which is nothing compared to its 17000€ costing rival 4K.

For years manufacturers have tantalized consumers with the promise of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) televisions capable of delivering more brilliant colors (including deeper blacks), and greater levels of contrast and brightness than any other television screen—all with rapid video response rate. OLEDs are already in regular use to provide crystal-clear screens for smart phones, car stereos and digital cameras.
