"Dementia Whisperer" To Speak At Memory Loss Support Group

"Dementia Whisperer" To Speak At Memory Loss Support Group | Home Heathcare for Aging in Place | Scoop.it

28 August, 2014: Laura Wayman, known nationally as the "Dementia Whisperer," will be leading the monthly Alzheimer's and dementia support group at Carlton Plaza of Elk Grove on Sunday, August 24, at 2 p.m. Wayman is a renowned expert in the field of memory care. In 2001, she started the Dementia Whisperers, a company that helps families and professionals deal with the process of caring for those suffering from memory loss.

The Carlton Plaza of Elk Grove support group is held on the fourth Sunday of every month and is open to seniors and the families of those suffering from Alzheimer's, dementia or any other form of memory loss.

Wayman's book, "A Loving Approach to Dementia Care," was published by Johns Hopkins University Press and compiles the lessons she learned while working with care providers and recipients. As a speaker, author, trainer and gerontologist, Wayman brings her knowledge and expertise to those who need it most, people suffering from memory loss – such as dementia and Alzheimer's – and their loved ones.

"Sadly, many caregivers sacrifice their own well-being" when caring for a loved one with dementia, said Wayman. "Along with the challenges of caring for a person with dementia, caregivers – especially family members – experience conflicting emotions that may swing from guilt and denial one moment to empathy, acceptance and understanding the next."

She said to cope with the challenge, caregivers must access all of their options for support, including local community resources. "Never be afraid to ask for help."

Carlton Plaza of Elk Grove is a senior living community featuring independent living, assisted living for those who need a little extra help with day-to-day activities and memory care for those suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia. The community features restaurant-style dining all day with a wide variety of menu options, including diabetic-friendly choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
