You Asked: Should I Worry About Wi-Fi Radiation? ("threats still theoretical, just maintain distance")

You Asked: Should I Worry About Wi-Fi Radiation? ("threats still theoretical, just maintain distance") | HOMECOMPUTECH | Scoop.it

Researchers have spent years looking for health risks tied to the types of radio waves wireless networks emit. They’ve yet to find any.

Asked for specifics, Foster says it helps to understand how Wi-Fi works. While most people assume their wireless router is constantly sending and receiving information, Foster says these devices actually transmit just 0.1% of the time. “Maybe that goes up somewhat if you’re streaming video,” he says, “but most of the time your router is just sitting idly waiting for something to happen.”

Also, every inch you put between yourself and your Wi-Fi router significantly lowers the strength of the radiation your body encounters. “Put it this way,” Foster says. “During a call, your mobile phone is transmitting steadily at a strength maybe 100 times more powerful than Wi-Fi, and you’re holding the phone right against your head, and we still don’t find any health issues with that level of exposure.”

The World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have classified mobile phones as a “possible carcinogen,” which means there’s currently not enough research to say whether either causes cancer.

Moskowitz doesn’t disagree with Moulder. But he says the amount of radio wave radiation people—and especially children—are exposed to today is different, and this raises new concerns. When it comes to our long-term, cumulative exposures to all our wireless networks and gadgets, “we’re basically flying blind,” he says.

Of course, trying to avoid radio wave exposure is more or less impossible if you live in modern society. Moskowitz advises keeping wireless devices away from your body and turning off wireless networks when they're not in use. While any health risks are still theoretical, “I think trying to minimize exposure is the best advice at this point,” Moskowitz adds.

Anything in excess has possible negative effects, although there are no conclusive studies yet. In the meantime, do not be paranoid; just apply precautions in the use of your wifi gadgets.

Richard Platt's curator insight, August 26, 2017 10:22 AM

In the mid-1990s, Phan helped build the Draper Small Autonomous Aerial Vehicle, the world’s first fully autonomous helicopter. While working on Wall Street in the early 2000s, he became an early pioneer of the high-frequency trading system, which consists of powerful computers that rapidly complete tons of trading transactions.   As co-founder, CEO, and chief technology officer of Top Flight Technologies, Phan is now one of the first entrepreneurs to commercialize hybrid gas-to-electric drones. The drones offer an order-of-magnitude increase in range, payload size, and power over battery-powered counterparts.   Coming to market this fall, the hybrid drones could help make drone package-delivery a reality, and enhance capabilities for crop imaging, military surveillance, emergency response, and remote infrastructure inspection, among other applications. As the startup continues to develop hybrid drone power sources, the technology could also pave the way for human flight.  “The key is having an abundance of power and total energy. That’s what petrol and  gasoline gives you,” Phan says. “Using a high-energy-density energy source like gasoline, and converting it to electric power, and doing it efficiently, gives you the equivalent of a ‘super battery.’”

If your business is involved in B2B sales or has any e-commerce components on its website, then data security should be of concern to you. If you don't clearly understand the difference between http and https protocols, you could be placing your business at considerable risk, and you should definitely read this article and consider your options.

5 ways to get the most out of online healthcare software training

5 ways to get the most out of online healthcare software training | HOMECOMPUTECH | Scoop.it

When it comes to online training, I often find that many participants have reservations about online courses. Many think it will be hard to focus and they won’t learn as much as an in-person class. I can relate – when given the option to take an online class versus an in-person class, I used to always pick the latter. That was before I realized the benefits of convenience that online training offers.

After taking and also teaching many online training sessions, I’ve gathered a few tips to help you get the most out of your online training experience.

1. Tell coworkers you are in a training session.

The idea here is to minimize the amount of distractions that can occur during class. Set expectations in advance by letting coworkers know you may take longer than usual to respond to requests during the training session. Try setting up automatic email replies that alert others you are in a training session and will reply as soon as possible. It may also be a good idea to block off your online calendar so coworkers will know you are attending a class.

However, if you need to leave the training session to attend to an urgent work matter, let the instructor know.

2. Log in to your online training course from a different location.

If your regular work environment is particularly distracting, minimize distractions by attending training from a different location. Whether this is from a conference room or your home (assuming it’s quieter there), relocating can be extremely beneficial to ensure you absorb the information presented during class.

3. Check your internet connection before class

A strong and reliable internet connection is key to your success in an online training class. This will help you hear and see the presentation as designed, as it is presented. A wired connection is almost always preferred over Wi-Fi. If that is not possible, ensure the Wi-Fi signal is strong prior to class so you don’t experience technical difficulties.

4. Don’t be shy! Participate in online class dialogue.

Participating more than you would in an in-person class can help you stay engaged with the online class material. Try regularly asking questions or try answering questions posed by the instructor, even if this isn’t your typical approach (don’t worry, no one can see you online). The more engaged you are during online training, the more likely you are to retain the material and remain focused throughout the duration of the class.

5. Speak up when you need help.

During in-person classes, the first indication that a student may need help is a furrowed brow or a confused look on a his or her face. With online classes, however, the instructor usually doesn’t have visual cues alerting them when to intervene. Speak up if you don’t understand a concept or have a question! Otherwise the instructor will assume you are comprehending the information as intended.

5 Shocking Ways Your Cell Phone Is Hurting Your Health ("every good thing may have a dark side")

5 Shocking Ways Your Cell Phone Is Hurting Your Health ("every good thing may have a dark side") | HOMECOMPUTECH | Scoop.it

Sure, your iPhone is a lifesaver when it comes to multitasking, but did you know that it could also be causing significant physical and emotional health problems for you? Check out this list and see if you identify with any of these problems — and then find out how to remedy the situation.

Nomophobia

The problem: Becoming addicted to your phone has become such a real condition that experts have given it a name: "Nomophobia" (no-mobile-phone-phobia). It's not limited to the hardcore Wall Street types with their "crackberries" though; it's more widespread than we realized.

Layers of Filth

The problem: The disturbing number of germs found on your phone is no joke — one University of Arizona study found that the average phone has up to 10 times the amount of bacteria found in a bathroom!

Dangerous Distractions

The problem: Using your phone increases your chances of being seriously injured. Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University studied the brains of drivers using cell phones, and found that just listening to someone talk reduced brain activity by 37 percent.

Poor Sleep Health

The problem: You should know by now that using gadgets with bright screens before bed makes it harder to fall asleep. Exposure to artificial light before going to bed can suppress your brain's ability to release melatonin, the hormone that regulates your sleep cycle.

Weakened Relationships

The problem: Constantly checking your phone while spending time with people takes away from your relationships, and it might even be making people see you differently.
