Obama Urges Big Preschool Expansion in State of the Union Speech | Holly BHS Government | Scoop.it
Michele McNeil covered education and state government in Indiana for a decade before joining Education Week as a state policy reporter in June 2006.
Holly Sutherland's insight:

It never really occured to me that other children don't go to preschool. To me, preschool is something everyone did, and it almost came to a shock to me that there are a lot of children who don't go. Personally, I don't remember much about preschool, but maybe without it I wouldn't be at the intellectual level I'm at right now. Also, I like the idea of modernizing the high school curriculum and adding in more programs with colleges and employers, I feel like that would be very beneficial to students who want to be successful in life.

Sarah Nguyen's curator insight, February 19, 2013 7:06 AM

I was surprised when Obama said that he wanted to ensure high quality preschooling. For me, preschool is about learning social skills: following directions, being nice to others, sharing, etc. These are also things that kids can learn from their parents. More schooling is always good, but I would need more convincing to agree that money should be put into the Head Start program. I completely support the Race to the Top program that is trying to make more high schools have curriculum that can be useful for jobs immediately after graduation.

I think that this shows the success of the Republican plan to use emotional appeal to the public to gain support for Romney and Ryan, but it also shows they may have gained more diverse voters like they aimed to do.

SCOOPABLE 9/18

This article shows that the gender gap for women is stronger in some races than in others, this article particularly singling out Latino women. It does a good job of pointing out that a lot of the reason they are voting Democrat aren't social issues but more economically based reasons. It also points out that the gender gap is much smaller in the latino race, with a majority of Latino men still planning on voting Democratic.
