Psychiatry and a Near Mass Shooting at Cornell

Psychiatry and a Near Mass Shooting at Cornell | Holistic Physical Therapy | Scoop.it
Many people struggle to control their violent feelings. Almost none massacre other people. Psychiatric drugs can become the tipping point.
Barbara Sweeney Rabin's insight:
Just because a patient is on psychiatric drugs and under a psychiatrists care does not make them less dangerous. Psychiatric drugs are NOT for children, and usually cause instability with initiation and almost always with cessation. They should not be stopped abruptly and only under medical care and very slowly. The problem is doctors put patients on these drugs but rarely is there help to stop taking them. Someone is making a lot of money at the expense of not only substandard care for that patient but many people being traumatized and killed as a result of this medical malpractice.

New ACC/AHA High Blood Pressure Guidelines Lower Definition of Hypertension | Holistic Physical Therapy | Scoop.it
Barbara Sweeney Rabin's insight:
The guidelines for identifying hypertension have been revised for early identification and to encourage lifestyle changes to ... Stage 1 to 130-39 mm HG for systolic blood pressure (BP) and 80-89 mm HG for diastolic BP. This doesn't mean you need medication at this level but it is important to start lowering BP with non-pharma interventions.

Finding the brain’s lymphatic system overturned more than 300 years of accepted wisdom.
Barbara Sweeney Rabin's insight:
The brain is not our "computer" but a living organ whose function and health is affected by our lifestyles. It needs proper rest, nutrition, movement and care - just like any other organ of our body. Otherwise the brain can become toxic and lead to acute and chronic diseases. I believe if we Improve the health of the body and brain, so many diseases so many "chronic" diseases can be cured.

Homeless Youth Find Their Way Home

Homeless Youth Find Their Way Home | Holistic Physical Therapy | Scoop.it
When I was sixteen, I was living by myself in a one-room shack perched on
the edge of a ravine in the middle of a redwood forest in northern
California. My living space was not insulated, and I heated it with an old
pot-bellied stove I scavenged from a neighbor. It had no running water, so
I hauled what I could carry in a five-gallon container.
Barbara Sweeney Rabin's insight:
Looks like a powerful read ... "When we bear the unbearable, we either collapse in on ourselves or we expand our hearts to contain impossible pain and, as a result, may be imbued with greater wisdom, deeper compassion, and an inclination to find beauty in the most ordinary moments of life .... I am not suggesting here that our traumas are good news. I do believe, however, that navigating suffering and loss waters the garden of our souls so they may burst effortlessly into bloom." ~ Mirabai Starr The Caravan of No Despair: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation

How to Make Friends with your Reptilian Brain

How to Make Friends with your Reptilian Brain | Holistic Physical Therapy | Scoop.it
Our reptilian brains are wired to keep us safe, but if we are not careful, they can take over. Learn how to recognise the signs and regain control.
Barbara Sweeney Rabin's insight:
The Power of Breath
"Breathing is usually taken care of without conscious effort by the reptilian brain, but it’s a function of the reptilian brain that we can also control. In a moment of crisis – stop and breathe. Breathe in and out, deeply and slowly, right down and into your belly. This calms your flight or fight response immediately and is the first skill taught to those who suffer anxiety. When the breath is calm, the mind follows and you will be able to detach from the impulses of the reptilian brain and bring reasoning to the situation. You can consciously shift your focus to the neo-cortex. Making this shift, you take your power back."

Gut Flora-Dependent TMAO: New Studies Extend Its Reach Beyond the Arteries to the Heart and Kidneys

Gut Flora-Dependent TMAO: New Studies Extend Its Reach Beyond the Arteries to the Heart and Kidneys | Holistic Physical Therapy | Scoop.it
When dietary choline and L-carnitine meet gut flora, the result is TMAO — and much unhealthful mischief. New research shows the damage goes beyond atherosclerosis to heart failure, chronic kidney disease and maybe more.
Barbara Sweeney Rabin's insight:
We are what we eat - Literally!!!

Stanley Hazen, MD, PhD Chair of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Section Head of Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic states, “Our gut bacteria serve as a filter of our largest environmental exposure — the food we eat,” he says. “It’s reasonable to think of the intestinal microbiome as our largest endocrine organ. Just consider that the gut microbiome makes biologically active compounds that circulate in the body and impact end-organ physiology just like hormones do. But it’s a flexible endocrine organ, and what it’s fed over time can influence what it becomes. Once we work out the chemical language of this organ, we can develop drugs to manipulate it and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart failure, kidney disease and possibly a host of other conditions.” And, I counter - why can not science inform us of the correct foods to just eat in the first place and avoid the drugs?? #commonsenseisnotsocommon

The Science of How Our Minds and Our Bodies Converge in the Healing of Trauma

The Science of How Our Minds and Our Bodies Converge in the Healing of Trauma | Holistic Physical Therapy | Scoop.it
Barbara Sweeney Rabin's insight:
"The challenge of recovery is to reestablish ownership of your body and your mind — of your self. This means feeling free to know what you know and to feel what you feel without becoming overwhelmed, enraged, ashamed, or collapsed. For most people this involves (1) finding a way to become calm and focused, (2) learning to maintain that calm in response to images, thoughts, sounds, or physical sensations that remind you of the past, (3) finding a way to be fully alive in the present and engaged with the people around you, (4) not having to keep secrets from yourself, including secrets about the ways that you have managed to survive."

Ricardo Tubino's curator insight, May 9, 2017 4:44 PM
Trauma happens to many among us, our friends, our families, and our neighbors. Some of them  carry the scars for years, and it reflects on their bodies. The fact that trauma has ruled their lives for so long leaves them insecure and wary of their  surroundings. Physical activity can stimulate a sense of self assurance, that reflects on their outlook on life. Physical therapy will definitely help these people return to a more active and happier lifestyle . http://touchofhealthrehab.com
