tom familetti's insight:

This is a great article from one of my favorite poker websites.  It give you a quick guide on counting outs during a poker game.  This skill is crucial for anyone looking to take their poker play to the next level. Counting outs leads to learning to count odds.  Both are very important and can be mastered with simple 3rd grade math and some long division.

Swedish poker pro wins world title - and $10 million

Swedish poker pro wins world title - and $10 million | Hold'em Poker | Scoop.it
Swedish poker pro Martin Jacobson takes first place in the World Series of Poker, scoring a record payout of $10 million.

Via Casinos_UK
tom familetti's insight:

Even though this article doesn't say too much I am posting it because I was watching the final table live and the game play was crazy. Jacobson was "short-stack" going into the final three and managed to climb his way to the top and take the title.  He had a deathly stare (with no sunglasses) the entire time which amazed me! The gameplay completely changes when it comes down to two or three players left, very important part of the game.

The first poker game that I learned to play was 3-Card Brag.
tom familetti's insight:

Interesting article written by a poker writer who also plays a lot of poker. Many things he says in this article I find true.  He talks about poker as being something to do around your daily obligations. He says it is a good way to blow off steam or just relax.  Even though it is a game many people find it to be much more.  Some people make their living playing poker while others play for fun. Either way it is a game that can be played for any reason and thats why I love it.

Illegal poker tournament raided in Oshawa - CTV News | Hold'em Poker | Scoop.it
Two people have been charged with operating a gaming house after police say an illegal poker tournament was raided in Oshawa.
tom familetti's insight:

I find this story funny because I really don't find the need for law enforcement to waist time and money investigating and raiding an illegal poker tournament.  There didn't seem to be too many people there either.  I guess if it was operated by organize crime syndicates then it would make sense, but there was no mention of it.  Let the people play poker!

Poker Player Loses $1 Million After Incredible Bad Beat

Poker players Connor Drinan and Cary Katz go all in pre-flop with aces at the World Series of Poker $1 million buy-in tournament.
tom familetti's insight:

This video is an example of every poker player's worst nightmare. (awesome for the guy that won) Being in what poker players called a "bad beat" hand is always bittersweet.  Most bad beats occur when an incredible poker hand, like a four of a kind, beats another just as incredible poker hand. Sometimes casinos have jackpots worth hundreds of thousands for those involved in a bad beat hand. Usually the one who gets beat walks away with the jackpot! I posted this article to show that anything can happen in the game of poker which is why it is such and exciting and thrilling game to play.

The science behind gambling superstitions: It's all about the illusion of control

The science behind gambling superstitions: It's all about the illusion of control | Hold'em Poker | Scoop.it
If the average gambler had one wish, odds are he’d want one of two things: an endless supply of cash to gamble or an endless supply of luck to win. Unfortunately, such wishes don’t exist. But many gamblers make do with superstition.

Via Gerald Carey
tom familetti's insight:

This article is interesting to me because many people are superstitious about various different things, but nothing epitomizes superstition like gambling superstitions!  Whenever anyone goes gambling all they want is some luck. In reality, all that luck you think you are getting from some object or ritual is really your brain trying to fill in the gaps to make it seem like you have control.  This article does a good job of explaining that and giving good examples of gambling superstitions.  In poker luck is less relevant then other games, such as blackjack or roulette, because there is more strategy involved, but everyone still wants Lady Luck on their side!

Gerald Carey's curator insight, November 7, 2013 5:38 AM

Although this is from a Casino site, it is an interesting set of examples of superstitions amongst gamblers.  Certainly the range of methods that punters use to increase their luck is intriguing.

Atlantic City's Trump Plaza To Close By September | Casino ... | Hold'em Poker | Scoop.it
Trump Plaza reportedly closing by September, fourth Atlantic City casino to close this year, the first holding an online gambling permit.
tom familetti's insight:

Though this article is from July, I think it is a good example of how the gaming industry is changing.  Atlantic City's casinos are doing worse then ever before with a few of them already closed.  This article shows the figures of how badly some of these casinos are doing and why they are going under.  This is limiting the ability for poker players, who frequent AC, to play regularly.  This casino also has a personal appeal to me due to the fact that I got lost in it as a kid while my mom (a professional poker player) was signing up for a tournament!
