10 Reasons Why Lars Von Trier Might Actually be a Feminist

10 Reasons Why Lars Von Trier Might Actually be a Feminist | HNC Creative Media Production | Scoop.it
Lars Von Trier, the Danish director and screenwriter behind such films as Melancholia (2011) and Antichrist (2009), is a controversial figure in the world of contemporary cinema.

Half of the 14 films he has directed and written from 1977 to his most recent film, Nymphomaniac, in 2013, follow a female protagonist, and feature such contentious themes as sexuality, society and human nature, and psychological trauma and pathology. Any man repeatedly tackling such personal and intimate parts of the female experience  is inevitably exposing himself to scrutiny.

There have been many articles written about the so-called blatant misogyny found in his films, and there are some valid arguments one could make in regard to this notion, but there is one argument in particular, that many such articles are largely built upon, that is completely absurd: that the treatment of women in his films is presented to be mimicked, rather than abhorred.

Anyone who understands anything about storytelling can clearly see how ridiculous this argument is. It’s the same as saying “12 Years a Slave” is encouraging people to own slaves simply because it depicts slavery.

Lacan « Theory, Philosophy, and Cultural Studies

In this second mirror stage, the perfect form that the subject sees outside of himself does not take the form of an image of his body, like in a literal mirror. Instead, he sees certain well-functioning social groups and imagines them to be whole, perfect, and without desire. Coats writes, “As the adolescent looks around, he fantasizes that the disconnection he feels toward the group, reminiscent of his experience of the fragmented body, is not felt by the visually coherent others that he wishes to mirror” (144). The integration into this illusory social whole, for the adolescent, is contingent upon the abjection of the Real..

10 Common Mistakes Made by New Filmmakers

10 Common Mistakes Made by New Filmmakers | HNC Creative Media Production | Scoop.it

Here are the 10 mistakes Bruno mentions in the video:

Lack of preparation: It's incredibly important to be prepared when making a movie, but oftentimes new filmmakers make this mistake because they don't know what to prepare for. The list is long, but the most important things are: have lots of charged batteries, account for your gear/costumes/supplies, check the weather, finalize any permits/permissions, and wear comfy shoes.

Bad sound: Any seasoned filmmaker will tell you that having good sound is more important than having good images. So, if you're in the market for a new, fancy camera, you might want to consider funneling some of that investment into audio instead.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT? (dissecting the work of a master)

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT? (dissecting the work of a master) | HNC Creative Media Production | Scoop.it
SCENE/SHOT ANALYSIS

Here's the dissecting part....so it took me a while, but I decided to go through the entire film and look for things that I may have missed during my first viewing. Instead of writing paragraph upon paragraph, detailing the craftsmanship that I noticed behind each scene, I decided to sort of make a book. I for one like pictures and the less I have to read, the more engaged I am. That's just me, but I'm sure you'd rather this format than listening to me waffle on for pages at a time.

Please keep in mind that I had nothing to do with this film! The notes I have made cannot be accurate in the sense that I actually don't KNOW what is going on, what lens was used, etc. They are more of an observation based on, dare I say, educated guesses. In any case, I found it to be a great learning experience as I looked for beauty and subtle details in these shots....I hope you get something out of it too :)

Here's the first quarter of what I plan on finishing over the next month or so. It's quite time consuming, believe me! Hope you enjoy and please comment or make notes where you think I've missed something, or disagree with something.

The Most Common Framing Mistakes In Cinematography

The Most Common Framing Mistakes In Cinematography | HNC Creative Media Production | Scoop.it
Many up-and-coming DPs are focused on what camera they’ll be shooting on, how much dynamic range they can capture, and how to light their scene properly. Obviously, these are all important considerations. But few amateur cinematographers put enough effort or thought into the framing choices that they make — which is unfortunate, considering audiences will pick up on the subtle cues of framing before just about anything else.

For those of you just starting out in cinematography, these are the five most common framing mistakes you should avoid.

This Video Essay Breaks Down the Eyes of 'The Silence of the Lambs'

This Video Essay Breaks Down the Eyes of 'The Silence of the Lambs' | HNC Creative Media Production | Scoop.it
Why? It has to do with gaze theory, which, in brief, thinks of film in psychoanalytic terms: as a scopophilic activity, or an activity characterized by pleasure in the act of looking. Male gaze theory posits that in film, women have traditionally been elevated to spectacle, while men have been the watchers. The audience feels the discomfort of Foster's character as she is objectified by the people she meets on her journey. But instead of being a victim or an object, as in so many other horror films (Benedict references, among others, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Clarice is the subject. Her agency is part of what makes the film so unique.
