Hjaltland Network
The Network held an excellent, constructive meeting in Edinburgh University on Friday. Eileen and Val from the Shetland Amenity Trust, Peder from Copenhagen, Berit from Lund, Andrew from UHI and Arne from Edinburgh were all present. It was decided to extend the Network to include other scholars, but retain the present members as the Steering Committee. It would get too unwieldy to increase the organizational membership at the moment, while we concentrate on Shetland. Peder revealed that he had been successful in his application for funds from CITI, Copenhagen University, for Andrew and himself to spend a month writing up an application for large-scale funds. Andrew reported on his visit to the isle of Man, where he showed the members of the Viking Destinations Association some kml-files, including one showing the Viking raids and another the Manx Crosses. The Manx Crosses file has also been converted to a Wikitude AR file, handy when visiting the Manx runic inscriptions. The afternoon was spent on practical matters. Peder explained how to create a searchable interactive map with the NGR referencing system. Things are progressing well. The data sets have been identified. The technical challenges are being dealt with and the visualization on Google Earth and Smart phones is being developed.
