30 Hidden Secrets of Carrie Reichardt’s extraordinary mosaic house in Chiswick

30 Hidden Secrets of Carrie Reichardt’s extraordinary mosaic house in Chiswick | Historical London | Scoop.it
The secrets behind the art on the mosaic house in Chiswick
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
Thrown off a train at South Acton recently, due to a fire at Gunnersbury. Found this house , or rather the rear view, whilst lost in deepest suburbia, desperately looking for a bus, a tube, a way out. Stopped me in my tracks. Didn't realise it had such a fascinating history, didn't realise I was viewing it back to front. I had never been to South Acton before, apart from whizzing through on an overground train, on the way to Richmond. What a find. Can't wait to return to view the front and maybe get a glimpse of that mosaic-covered  cab!

Hans Sloane » History

Hans Sloane » History | Historical London | Scoop.it
"While in Jamaica, Hans Sloane was introduced to cocoa as a drink favoured by the local people. He found it ‘nauseous’ but by mixing it with milk made it more palatable. He brought this chocolate recipe back to England where it was manufactured and at first sold by apothecaries as a medicine. Eventually, in the nineteenth century, it was taken up by Messrs Cadbury who manufactured chocolate using Sloane’s recipe."

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
Lots of fascinating facts about this familiar London street, including this one

"235 Regent Street, now home to the Apple store, was once occupied by Salviati, a glassmaking and mosaic firm hailing from the island of Murano in Venice. In 1898, the company adorned the outside of its Regent Street premises with an intricate mosaic, incorporating two lions and four coats of arms, representing the cities of London and Westminster, and the Venetian islands of Murano and Burano. The mosaics were restored in 1999 and can still be admired today.."

Handel and Hendrix

Handel and Hendrix | Historical London | Scoop.it
Live music is an important part of what we do at Handel & Hendrix in London to bring to life the world of these two musical greats. Rehearsals, masterclasses, Saturday talks and the weekly Thursday Live concert series celebrate Handel’s London in the 18th century and take place in the historic Rehearsal and Performance Room where Handel would rehearse his latest operas or oratorios with musicians and singers. From February 2016 we will expand our season with special Hendrix themed events."
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
Handel AND Hendrix? Quite a musical cocktail.

I visited several years ago, during Open House London. It was filled with music and people that day. I will return for a quieter glimpse into the 18th century and imagine Handel there, composing The Messsiah
