Hillary Clinton is out of US politics but says she will not be silent.
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

Hillary Clinton: 'New Zealand's success - an example we so desperately need' | New Zealand Herald | 05/07/2018

EXCERPT:

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is out of politics but says she will not be silent about what she describe about the "strangest goings on we are living though" in the United States.

In a wide-ranging discussion to about 3000 people in Auckland tonight, Clinton canvassed everything from her recollection of a FaceTime with her grandchildren from One Tree Hill (or One Tree Place, as she called it) to North Korea and her wish she had bit back after US President Donald Trump "stalked me" on stage during a debate........

Clinton spoke about the toll of politics on women, speaking of the personal attacks but peppering her address with wry comments such as the time that went into makeup and clothing: "you lose months on that kind of stuff".

She noted Dame Jenny Shipley, who was interviewing her, was the first woman Prime Minister of New Zealand.

"You're now on your third woman Prime Minister. Just saying.." a pointed reminder that the US was yet to get its first that was rewarded with a loud round of applause.

While many of the stories she related about the 2016 campaign were from her book 'What Happened', Clinton spoke on the international environment from North Korea to concerns about Russian and Chinese influence and cyber attacks.

"Yale Law School Works to Create Fund in Hillary Clinton's Name" | JDJournal - Law Students | 04/04/2018

SUMMARY:  "A former classmate of Hillary Clinton's is working diligently to get a fund created in her name for those in public interest work."

EXCERPT:  Classmate Rosalind Fink ’72 is working with the development office to develop the Hillary Rodham Clinton Fund for the Public Interest. Fink explained to the Yale Daily News that the fund should allow for two recent Yale graduates in “public interest work” to obtain a year-long fellowship from the fund starting next fall, once the law school formally announces the creation of the fund.

The fund is still in an early stage of development but the ultimate goal is to raise enough money so that Yale Law can create additional legal clinics that will enable law students more opportunities for hands-on experience working with clients on matters like immigration.

Clinton has led a notable career that started out in the public interest sector. During law school, she worked at the Yale Child Study Center and was later an attorney for the Children’s Defense Fund. She then worked at the University of Arkansas School of Law where she was one of only two female faculty members. She was their first director of a legal aid clinic. Of course, since then Clinton went through two presidential campaigns and served as secretary of state and as a U.S. senator for New York.

"I was really struck by how people said that to me - you know, mostly people in the press, for whatever reason - mostly, 'Go away, go away,'" Clinton said Thursday during an event at Rutgers University.

"And I had one of the young people who works for me go back and do a bit of research. They never said that to any man who was not elected. I was kind of struck by that," Clinton said.

Clinton's remarks came in response to a question from Eagleton Institute of Politics' director Ruth Mandel about the former Democratic presidential nominee's reaction to those who say she should "get off the public stage and shut up."

INSIGHT: "As Hillary Clinton releases her tell-all, behind-the-scenes breakdown of the 2016 election, we’ve been hit with a slate of — mostly men — telling her to sit down and shut up.

And to that I say: fuck you.

Hillary doesn’t need to shut up about anything.

Hillary Clinton has a problem. And that problem is you motherfuckers who say there is a “likability” or “electabilty” problem with Hillary Clinton. She’s been fighting for America basically her whole adult life, and yet despite everything that is said about her, done to her, she just continued to fight.

Like it or not, Hillary made history. And she will be remembered. I hope history looks kindly on this amazing woman, who inspires me (a gay Australian 19 year old man) and the thousands of women who signed up to run for office.

And I especially hope that will be her legacy; the woman who put the biggest fucking crack in that highest, hardest glass ceiling."

INSIGHT: “In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I’ve often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net. Now I’m letting my guard down.” —Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the introduction of What Happened

For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet.

In these pages, she describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. With humor and candor, she tells readers what it took to get back on her feet—the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through, and what the experience has taught her about life. She speaks about the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics.

She lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome, and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future.

The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign and its aftermath—both a deeply intimate account and a cautionary tale for the nation.

BACKGROUND: "A group of fanatical Bernie Sanders supporters went scrounging around the Internet recently, digging up old blog posts of a homophobic nature published many years ago by JoyAnn Reid, host of MSNBC’s popular morning talk show AM Joy.

There are no doubt the content of the posts were wrong. Reid apologized for the unkind things she’d said in the past, owned it, and moved forward. Her apology serves as a model for us all.

But that is not the issue here. Those posts were dug up and released for a reason. And genuine concern over the threat Joy Reid might pose to the LGBT community does not appear to be it.

It is the opinion of Millennial Democrats that it happened because Reid’s past political commentary has been critical of Bernie Sanders."

Could grieving parents force the right to confront a fake news epidemic?
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

"How the Seth Rich Conspiracy Could Stop Fake News at Fox News and Other Conservative Outlets" | Newsweek | 03/29/2018

EXCERPT:  "John Kerry served dishonorably during the Vietnam War. Barack Obama is a Muslim, born in Indonesia. Hillary Clinton knew about Benghazi, and yet did nothing. These and many other untruths have been disseminated in the right-wing media, which couches them in the principled bluster of the fearless truth-teller taking on the media establishment. They have been eagerly repeated and amplified on the internet, where journalistic standards are looser, if not nonexistent.

But in the family of Seth Rich, Fox News and younger, internet-based outlets like Infowars and Breitbart News appear to have encountered a formidable foe: grieving parents outraged at the fake news that has been spread surrounding Seth’s murder. If the Rich family succeeds in the lawsuits they’ve filed this month, conservative media will have to collectively face, for perhaps the first time, the effects of spreading misinformation. Even if victorious, the Rich family is unlikely to cripple the enormously profitable media organization like Fox, which is run by Rupert Murdoch, one of the world’s wealthiest individuals. But the public reckoning can be just as powerful as a financial defeat."

Lobbying groups are concerned about losing more than half a trillion dollars -- which would threaten access to care.
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT: "The hospital industry has a warning for President-elect Donald Trump and congressional leaders: Eliminating the Affordable Care Act without first crafting a “replacement” would create major hardships throughout the health care system.

Hospitals traded billions of dollars in Medicare and Medicaid payment cuts for expanded health coverage under the Affordable Care Act, reasoning it would be good for hospital finances to have fewer uninsured patients who don’t pay for their care. Congressional Republicans are leaning toward a plan that would repeal the law early next year, but delay enacting a new system for up to three years.

That won’t work, according to two influential hospital lobbying groups."

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT: "Our nations’ First People have often suffered at the hands of the American government. We pray that all parties involved recognize and account for significant overarching factors within this controversy.  Let us not forget the degree of inadequacy of tribal consultation in the past and present of US-tribal relations. As an example, we note that a central location in this defense of tribal lands and waters – Lake Oahe – did not exist until the 1960s, when the federal government created the Oahe dam without the consent of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. The dam flooded over 200,000 acres of the tribes’ lands, forcing peoples from their homes, submerging towns, critical natural resources, burial sites, and sacred places.

Additionally, many of our churches have repudiated the Doctrine of Discovery.  This doctrine, a result of U.S. Supreme Court jurisprudence beginning with Johnson v. M’Intosh in 1823 and its progeny, promotes the concept that allowed colonial powers to lay claim to newly discovered lands during the Age of Discovery. Consequently, title to newly discovered territories lay with the government whose subjects discovered the land. In addition, decisions were made that invalidated or ignored aboriginal claims to possession of land in favor of colonial and post-colonial entities.

Today, the actions by the government, as well as oil corporations, have the same effect as the doctrine of discovery.  The use of eminent domain laws to attempt to circumvent the rightful ownership of these tribal lands is deplorable."

Posting ballot selfies: Personal choice or illegal act?

TRENTON, N.J. — "You probably already know whether you'll vote for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton on Election Day, leaving one important question to consider when you walk into your polling place: Is it OK to take a picture of your ballot?"

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

INSIGHT: "While secrecy in the voting booth has become a thing of the past for those ready to share their views and daily lives on social media, laws nationwide are mixed on whether voters are allowed to take pictures of themselves in the act or of their ballots — "ballot selfies".

Federal judges have struck down bans on selfies in New Hampshire and Indiana, and rules have been changed in places like California and Rhode Island, but in many states it's still a violation that carries potential fines or jail terms.

There are laws against sharing any photo of your ballot in 18 states, while six other states bar photography in polling places but do allow photos of mail-in ballots, according to a review by The Associated Press."
