Separate & unequal: How higher education reinforces the intergenerational reproduction of white racial privilege -- New study/free download

Separate & unequal: How higher education reinforces the intergenerational reproduction of white racial privilege -- New study/free download | Higher Ed News | Scoop.it

"The higher education system is more and more complicit as a passive agent in the systematic reproduction of white racial privilege across generations. This report analyzes enrollment trends at 4,400 postsecondary institutions by race and institutional selectivity over the past 15 years.Since 1995, 82 percent of new white enrollments have gone to the 468 most selective colleges, while 72 percent of new Hispanic enrollment and 68 percent of new African-American enrollment have gone to the two-year open-access schools..."

Student Data Principles

Student Data Principles | Higher Ed News | Scoop.it

"Everyone who uses student information has a responsibility to maintain students’ privacy and the security of their data, especially when these data are personally identifiable. This starts with limiting the data that are collected, stored, shared, and used to support student learning and success. Whenever possible, aggregated, de-identified data that do not identify individual students should be used to inform key policy decisions and help improve services and systems that benefit students..."

"Austin, Tex. — Student privacy, easier-to-use digital tools for instructors, and efforts to offer alternative credentials were some of the most-talked-about topics this week at the South by Southwest Edu conference, an offshoot of the popular South by Southwest music festival. The event brings together a mix of participants from different parts of education — teachers, administrators, and publishers in elementary, secondary, and higher education. This year The Chronicle hosted a “special program” on “Understanding the New Landscape of Higher Ed,” about which we’ll share more details in the coming weeks.
As we look through our notebooks of other sessions at the event, here are some highlights..."

Olgy Gary's curator insight, February 18, 2015 1:09 PM

I realize and agree that we need to care for those with disabilities…but in my mind I’m also thinking, based on the photo in the article and caption under the photo, we’re talking about the MOOCs these institutions offer. These are free courses being offered! I mean, if I were walking down the street and a store had tables out on the sidewalk for things they were giving away, not things I would have to go into the store to buy, but things, nice things, they’re giving away, why would I ever sue the store because none of the things they’re giving away fit me? As long as courses have one statement, with a link, that points students to the institution's disability office, and that office works one on one with those who need help, I don't see why clo-captions ought to be mandatory. It makes little sense to me for lawsuits to be filed for things that are given away freely.

Fixing the higher-education adjunct crisis lies in truth-telling: Slate opinion

Fixing the higher-education adjunct crisis lies in truth-telling: Slate opinion | Higher Ed News | Scoop.it
By Rebecca Schuman ST. LOUIS - Changes are afoot among us part-time adjuncts who shoulder a hefty majority of college instruction in the United States. We have, for now, the attention of Congress. We've got our own snappy hashtags! And...

That's why I'm calling on U.S. News, the leading college ranking service in the country, to track the percentage of classes taught by adjuncts in their rankings - and penalize schools that use too many..."
