The Technology is Brilliant but the Magic Happens When Teachers Learn to Let Go - teacherwithapps

The Technology is Brilliant but the Magic Happens When Teachers Learn to Let Go - teacherwithapps | High School Math Education | Scoop.it

"I focus on the power of the iPad to increase students’ growth and development, self-reliance and independence, with a strong emphasis on study skills. Yes, content is a covered also, and I choose apps accordingly, yet always knowing that this powerful tool needs the guidance of an instructor who is willing to let go.  I wrote this blog quite awhile back, still seems relevant: I Know My Way Around an iPad. Here I discussed the distinction between knowing how to use an iPad and knowing how to teach lessons to a class of students with iPads in hand.

Actually teaching a class of students with iPads, is a very different scenario than any other tech integration. As comfortable as I am with technology, it is new territory teaching kids when they have the world at their fingertips and the majority of them are way more tech savvy than you or I will ever will be."

A few weeks ago a group of senior mathematicians, teachers, statisticians, and curriculum developers met in Boston to discuss the future of high school mathematics, revisiting issues addressed by a 2008 conference organized by the Center for Mathematics Education at the University of Maryland.

This time, the Common Core State Standards was front and center of the discussion. Participants in the Boston meeting, sponsored by the non-profit Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications, formulated a set of recommendations for progressive action in the field and drafted an essay to explain their ideas.
