Coaches Lament Football's Changes, Worry For its Future

Coaches Lament Football's Changes, Worry For its Future | High School Football Recruiting | Scoop.it
Editors' note: This is Part 1 in a long-term series about the challenges facing football's long-term future.
Dirk Knudsen's insight:

So football is going to be gone from High Schools within a Decade.  I believe that.  It is already moving to clubs in many areas and with kids transferring all over the place chasing the dream of football glory the haves are getting more powerful and the have nots are going down hill.  There are a lot of reasons this is happening.  But consider this-  schools are being named in litigation all over the Nation and Insurance companies are ratcheting up the costs.  If a District can let a private club use their field for a nice fee and just wash their hands of it they will.  The game is more dangerous then ever and even though we know more that means we have more responsibility and liability.  I believe the kids are much bigger and stronger and faster - and just because we got knocked out often and were awakened by Ammonia Capsules and put back in does not mean we are ok-  alot of guys are in fact not OK.  This article touches on some good points but falls short in a lot of ways.  Still you all need to realize we are in the Sunset of the game as we know and enjoy it.

High schools: Some kids say football not worth the effort

High schools: Some kids say football not worth the effort | High School Football Recruiting | Scoop.it
A disturbing refrain is being echoed by coaches throughout high-school football two-a-days of late: Our numbers are down. Always fearful of injuries decimating team depth, coaches can never have enough players on the roster. But their concerns this summer have more merit. Studies in Ohio and nationwide confirm that participation numbers — trickling all the way to the youth level — are on a steady decline.
Dirk Knudsen's insight:

Why is High School Football seeing record drops in the numbers of kids coming out?  Is it the Heat?  Is it Isolation of kids?  Is it Concussion and body damage?  What is going to happen from here?

NCAA antitrust ruling barely chips at college sports dysfunction

On Sept. 4, 2010, at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, I was part of what the public address announcer proudly told us was the largest crowd ever to watch a football game anywhere in the world, college or pro.
Dirk Knudsen's insight:

"Big-college football and basketball each have become a business, pure and simple, and the only way to end what has become a giant con game is for the NCAA to get out of the business."   What is going to happen is that athletes will play for a college and get paid even if  they do not go to school there-  that is what we are talking about here.  How much should a great High School kid get to attend a college?  Maybe $100,000 a year?  More?  Think it won't happen?  The way things are heading it will.  So what is next?

On the heels of the NCAA's Division I board voting to allow the "Power Five" conferences to make some of their own rules, our man Bob Bowlsby, Big 12 commissioner and managerial-class Marxist, inadvertently made the best argument for why football and basketball players (at most schools) should be treated differently from other athletes.
