Sexual Exploitation of Native Women: Challenging the Shame

Sexual Exploitation of Native Women: Challenging the Shame | Herstory | Scoop.it

[I think sex work is fine -- if it's a choice and not slavery, but...]

Last week, Indian Country Todaypublished a story by independent journalist and photographer Mary Annette Pember (Red Cliff Tribe of Wisconsin Ojibwe) about generations of American Indian women who have been sexually exploited—in Duluth, Minn., of all places.

If it’s a hard story to read, it was an even harder one to report—especially for Pember. Last week, she shared her thoughts on the personal and professional challenges of reporting on violence against women and the need for all of us to stop acting as though male sexuality is an unstoppable urge.

With a title similar to Demi's movie, this adult game is based on sex work: "The object is to make enough money to pay for sex. To do this, players must accumulate money by selling sexual favors to their opponent."

Arrested and Detained Parents Are Denied Opportunity to Contact and Make Arrangements for Their Children

Arrested and Detained Parents Are Denied Opportunity to Contact and Make Arrangements for Their Children | Herstory | Scoop.it

by MELANIE TOM, Forward Together

and LAURA JIMENEZ, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice,

Strong Families via RH Reality Check

If you can, take a minute and imagine a situation where you are arrested or detained for some reason. Now imagine that you have children at home or in school awaiting your arrival but you never show. You are also not given the opportunity to make a phone call to ensure that your children are placed safely in the care of a trusted friend or family member so they are placed in Child Protective Services. This is happening right now to families all over America and it has to stop.

This is an issue of importance to us because of the disproportionate rates of incarceration of people of color through the criminal (in)justice system and the rising rates of detentions and deportations by the Department of Homeland Security. Not only are people of color being targeted but now our children are being undeservedly taken away from us because of a lack of implementation of policy and an all-around lack of empathy from law enforcement.

Women and families of color have done our best to provide safety and security of our children. This is our resistance, our determination to raise whole, healthy families in spite of the oppressive circumstances of our lives. Let our collective vision be that all families matter – promote family unity, protect parental rights, prevent children from entering foster care unnecessarily.

Kathryn Hall-Trujillo | Founder Birthing Project USA | Herstory | Scoop.it

Kathryn Hall-Trujillo worked for the state of California from 1976 to 1991 as a public health administrator, and during that time, noticed that families often struggled to pay for the care of infants born with serious health problems. When she realized that pregnancy care for expectant mothers would cost less than 0.01 percent of the funds used to stabilize a sick infant, she created Birthing Project USA -- a nonprofit organization that improves birth outcomes by recruiting and training community volunteers to provide guidance, education and social support to pregnant and parenting teens and women.

Equal Opportunity for Idealized Employees » Sociological Images

Sociologists have observed that employment in the U.S. is largely structured around an assumption that the worker has no family responsibilities. The ideas that an employee should be able to work during non-school hours, stay late when needed, take off time for their own illness but never anyone else’s, for example, all presume that the workers have either no children or someone else taking care of children for them.

Most jobs, then, are not designed to be compatible with family responsibilities. Since most people doing primary child care are women, this hurts mothers disproportionately. Mothers have a more difficult time being the “perfect employee” and also face discrimination from employers. This translates into some telling numbers. Women make about 69% of what men make (not controlling for type of occupation), but most of this disadvantage is related to parental status, not sex. Women without children make 90% of what men make, while mothers make 66%. Ann Crittenden’s book, The Price of Motherhood, lays out these numbers starkly.

Empreinte Lingerie: Lace Bras That Really Are For Divas | Herstory | Scoop.it

The most significant innovation in lace since John Leaver and Joseph Jacquard developed the two machines which would be called the Leaver's Lace Loom, giving the world Leavers Lace.

Creating molded lace was no small thing to do either.

It took the combined efforts of Empreinte, a German moulding expert, and a Swiss embroiderer 18 months and 40 prototypes to create the technology to design a seamless cup of molded guipure lace.

How do you deal with the "ick factor" surrounding senior sex — people's perception that it's somehow gross?

There are really two ick factors. One is the idea from society at large that seniors are asexual, and if they are sexual, they're pathetic. And also many seniors have internalized the idea that we're not desirable anymore. So we're embarrassed about wanting sex, and that's really the hardest challenge.
