Wave of opposition builds against immigrant children

Wave of opposition builds against immigrant children | English 2 | Scoop.it
An exception was the day she learned the Brazoria County Youth Home for abused local children, across the street from her house, had shut its doors for lack of money. A wave of resistance has grown this month against the federal government's efforts to open new shelters to handle the unprecedented influx of 57,000 children making the perilous trek here alone over the last nine months - double the number who made illegal border crossings last year. At least four counties and one city in the Houston area are weighing or have already approved resolutions to oppose federal efforts to put new shelters in their area. The resolutions also express concerns such as the potential spread of communicable diseases prevalent in third-world countries; teen immigrants associated with criminal gangs and cartels; and education expenses. [...] we don't have to offer any more services than the law requires, Adams said in reference to the newly refurbished Brazoria County Youth Home, which is housing about 40 migrant children in Oyster Creek. Clark, the Galveston County commissioner, said he's looking into the lease the county has for a building used by the Galveston Multicultural Institute to house 32 immigrant children. [...] once the immigrants are released from the shelter, they lose their Medicaid privileges while waiting for an immigration hearing that can take about two years, authorities said. Montgomery County officials also want information about Southwest Key's immigrant youth shelter that they recently discovered was operating on a 37-acre site on League Line Road in Conroe. Officials at Southwest Key - an Austin-based organization whose website says it's been the largest provider of immigrant shelter services for years - declined multiple requests for comment. The organization directed inquiries to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, which also did not respond to phone calls.
