Still harvesting the sunshine-filled flowers

Calendula was so named because it could bloom in every month of the calendar year. Whoever did that was not living in Canada. Here in Ontario we have what seems to me a fairly long growing season. Having also gardened in zone 2, being in zone 5 is like paradise...except that I have gardened on the West Coast and that's even balmier. The calendula flower is the source of many of our skin care salves and creams. All summer we would harvest the bright yellow and brilliant orange flower heads, carefully pulling out the petals and drying them to infuse in olive oil. As the plants grew, the blossoms seemed to multiply in number and shrink in individual size. But now, when the days are short and cool and moist, the blooms are larger and brighter than ever and such a joy to harvest. A few precious blossoms fill up a larger area on the drying screen and as the other flowers are fading, this one seems to glow brighter for all to see.No wonder Joanna wanted to call the cream "pure joy". These flowers can brighten up the dreariest of days.
