Apps and autism

Apps and autism | Helping children with autism with an iPad | Scoop.it
New technology can be inspiring, exciting or sometimes infuriating - but I can't ever remember it being really moving. Until, that is, I met Ruby Dunn, whose life is being changed by a piece of software.

This piece written by technology correspondent for the BBC Rory Cellan-Jones is yet another testimony on how allowing children with different abilities to find their voice thanks to technology is life changing, not only for those children, but for anyone who had the usual assumptions about their being "disabled".

I find it heartwarming, and if actually the cost of the software may be a burden to an individual family, the school system should understand that it is NOT an overated investment for the education of a very able, indeed, student.

TherAd for Autism for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

TherAd for Autism for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store | Helping children with autism with an iPad | Scoop.it
Therapeutic Advertisements for Autism: Ther-ad for Autism is an evidence based video self modeling application for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Numerous research studies have shown that video self modeling can help children with Autism to increase desired behaviors and consequently decrease problem behaviors at the same time.

Ther-ad for Autism allows a student to watch "motivating" media (movies) that are occasionally paused by Ther-ad at an interval that the parent or teacher sets. A short video self modeling clip is then presented to the student who then watches the short clip of themselves engaging in some behavior that the parent or teacher wishes to encourage. After the video self modeling clip finishes, the student is automatically reinforced by being returned to the motivating content.

Video content (both motivating and modeling) must be loaded by the user because each student is different in terms of what video content is motivating and of course each student will need their own self modeling content.

Ther-ad for Autism supports multiple clients with separate media libraries for each client, fully customizable modeling clip scheduling and data export for analysis of video modeling exposure for data based decision making.

Ther-Ad for Autism includes a free copy of the Durian Open Movie project, "Sintel". For more information about this film, visit http://www.sintel.org.

Carly is an amazing teenager who uses her inner voice to advocate for people with autism, and explains in plain words what it is like to live with autism. She blogs and uses social media to answer questions. She is the champion of all who because they cannot speak with their mouth are wrongly considered as not intelligent or capable of thoughts. Read her story and watch her, she is up for extraordinary things.

M. Ziti a une tablette de plus. Cette fois-ci, enfin, c'est le système de communication alternatif que je réclamais depuis... des années.

The School District finally provided an iPad with a communication aid app to my 17 year-old son with ASD. The app is Predictable by Therapy Box, and it is easy to use and has a great potential. It will also be a mountain of work to get him to use it in a communicative way, but I hope it is worth it.
