How to Install Multiple Linux Distributions on One USB | Héctor Cortez | Scoop.it

Creating a single bootable live USB of Linux is easy, you just download an ISO file and burn it to a USB drive. But, what if you want to try more than one Linux distribution? You can either use more than one USB or you can overwrite the same USB to try other Linux distributions. Neither of these methods is very convenient.

So, how about installing more than one Linux distributions on a single USB? We are going to see how to do it in this tutorial.

Visible Thinking

Visible Thinking | Héctor Cortez | Scoop.it
Purpose and Goals
Visible Thinking is a flexible and systematic research-based approach to integrating the development of students' thinking with content learning across subject matters. An extensive and adaptable collection of practices, Visible Thinking has a double goal: on the one hand, to cultivate students' thinking skills and dispositions, and, on the other, to deepen content learning. By thinking dispositions, we mean curiosity, concern for truth and understanding, a creative mindset, not just being skilled but also alert to thinking and learning opportunities and eager to take them

Who is it for?
Visible Thinking is for teachers, school leaders and administrators in K - 12 schools who want to encourage the development of a culture of thinking in their classrooms and schools.

Key Features and Practices
At the core of Visible Thinking are practices that help make thinking visible: Thinking Routines loosely guide learners' thought processes and encourage active processing. They are short, easy-to-learn mini-strategies that extend and deepen students' thinking and become part of the fabric of everyday classroom life. Thinking Ideals are easily accessible concepts capturing naturally occurring goals, strivings or interests that often propel our thinking. Four Ideals -- Understanding, Truth, Fairness and Creativity -- are presented as modules on this site. There are associated routines for each ideal and within each module there are activities that help deepen students' concepts around the ideal.

A key feature of the Visible Thinking approach is the Teacher Study Group as described in the School-Wide Culture of Thinking section. In these groups teachers reflect on student work, or documentation, generated by students when using routines or investigating an ideal. Documentation such as lists, maps, charts, diagrams, and worksheets reveal learners' unfolding ideas as they think through an issue. In study groups teachers use the structured conversation of a protocol to look at and reflect on thinking present in student work.

Uncovering Students' Thinking about Thinking Using Concept Maps

Uncovering Students' Thinking about Thinking Using Concept Maps | Héctor Cortez | Scoop.it

"A method for uncovering students’ thinking about thinking, specifically their meta-strategic knowledge, is explored within the context of an ongoing, multi-year intervention designed to promote the development of students’ thinking dispositions. The development of a concept-map instrument that classroom teachers can use and an analytic framework for interpreting students’ responses is presented. In a preliminary study, the concept map instrument is piloted used to evaluate changes in students’ conceptions of thinking after a year’s participation in classrooms where their teachers actively sought to make thinking more visible by noticing and naming the thinking observed as well as introducing and using thinking routines (Ritchhart & Perkins, 2008). Concept maps from 239 students from grades 3 through 11 were analyzed. Results suggest that students’ conceptions of thinking do improve with age but also can be substantially developed through a classroom culture where thinking is modeled and rich opportunities for thinking are present. The concept map instrument itself proved to be a robust instrument for uncovering students’ thinking about thinking."

World Bank warns of 'learning crisis' in global education

World Bank warns of 'learning crisis' in global education | Héctor Cortez | Scoop.it

Millions of young students in low and middle-income countries face the prospect of lost opportunity and lower wages in later life because their primary and secondary schools are failing to educate them to succeed in life. Warning of ‘a learning crisis’ in global education, a new Bank report said schooling without learning was not just a wasted development opportunity, but also a great injustice to children and young people worldwide.
The World Development Report 2018: ‘Learning to Realize Education’s Promise’ argues that without learning, education will fail to deliver on its promise to eliminate extreme poverty and create shared opportunity and prosperity for all. Even after several years in school, millions of children cannot read, write or do basic math. This learning crisis is widening social gaps instead of narrowing them. Young students who are already disadvantaged by poverty, conflict, gender or disability reach young adulthood without even the most basic life skills.

I think this crisis in education (Arendt and Derrida used that term is not restricted to poorer countries. It is happening in wealthy countries in areas that do not have the resources i.e. inner cities and indigenous communities.

The crisis is exacerbated by the way we continuously quantify and measure learning. Learning and teaching are deeply personal and human enterprises that are not easily reduced to a number.

Great learning platform.

Juan Camilo Largo's curator insight, September 1, 12:45 PM
Kiddom is a website recommended by Nik Peachey for several reasons. First, it enhances the planning and performance of classes by putting all your materials in the same place, which works similar to a cloud. It also allows you to create a class environment online. Therefore, you are able to adjust the setting for the class you want to create and adapt it to the courses you will add to the platform. It has the option to select the subject, grade, and students when you are creating the class. In addition to it, Kiddom offers you the possibility to analize your students' learning process through easy diagrams and statistics. Those are some of the great features that we can take advantage of when using Kiddom.
