A Stepp Above Service Company's insight:

The Sonoran Desert in which we live offers many beautiful qualities. The fine dust is not one of them. Air conditioners and heat pumps contain circuit boards like your computer. Dust can help create static electricity that can damage sensitive electrical components. Registering your equipment under a Preventative Maintenance Agreement will take care of this issue. This picture was taken by one of our techs. The component in the right hand corner is a circuit board. Does it look like one wearing all of that dust?

Give Your Air Conditioner Some Space.

Give Your Air Conditioner Some Space. | Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning | Scoop.it
A Stepp Above Service Company's insight:

Today’s air conditioning units are sleeker, quieter and more energy efficient than ever before, but that doesn't mean all homeowners like the way a big condenser looks sitting in their yard. Many homeowners, especially those who take pride in their beautifully landscaped yards, might be tempted to find creative ways to disguise or hide their AC units as they seek to create the perfect outdoor oasis in their back yards.

All these efforts are usually well-intentioned, but there’s a problem — it’s not good for air conditioning units to be hedged in too closely. In fact, if you improperly enclose an air conditioner, the obstructions around the AC can hinder air circulation around the unit and hamper its efficiency, ultimately costing you more in utility bills.

How Much Space Should I Leave Around My AC Unit?

When thinking about how much space to leave around your AC, it’s best to consult manufacturer’s recommendations. Any good HVAC company will follow these recommendations closely when installing or replacing an air conditioner. Most manufacturers recommend 2 to 3 feet of space around each side of your AC and 5 feet above the unit. Since your AC will need to be serviced at least once a year, you should also make sure one side stays clear to allow HVAC technicians easy access to your unit.

When to Think About Space around Your AC Unit

Good times to consider your air conditioner are when you are installing or expanding a deck, installing decorative masonry, putting up backyard play scapes, or planting hedges, shrubs and other greenery. With any of these projects, you will want to leave enough clearance for your AC so that it can operate at its peak. If you are uncertain about how much clearance is appropriate for your air conditioner, contact an experienced air conditioning professional for advice.
