You’re TV May Be Killing You

You’re TV May Be Killing You | Healthy Exercise and Eating Habits | Scoop.it

A new British Journal of Sports Medicine study found that – on average – your life expectancy decreases nearly 22 minutes with every hour of television you watch. This is actually more than a cigarette!

Jason's insight:

After reading this article, I learned that watching TV for an hour takes away double the minutes (22) from your life than does smoking a cigarette (11). While watching TV literally cannot kill you, it is the sedentary lifestyle that watching TV promotes that prompts us to live an unhealthy and inactive lifestyle. However, according to the article, this may not be entirely all our fault, as most working people in the world spend their entire shifts sitting and staring at a computer screen. On the contrary, exercising for an hour can add up to 2 hours to your lifespan. The article suggests a creative alternative to watching TV. For example, you can place your treadmill in front of your TV and exercise for 30 minutes without even realizing the time that went by. It is with these methods that we are capable of living balanced lives.

The Benefits of Going to the Gym Aren't Just Losing Weight | Healthy Exercise and Eating Habits | Scoop.it
When we think of pumping iron in the gym or working up a sweat on the treadmill, our primary goal is generally to lose weight or maintain a figure we're happy with.

Jason's insight:

After reading this article, I learned that going to the gym doesn't have to be just for physical benefits. One positive effect that exercise has is that it improves your mental condition. For example, having a consistent exercise routine leads to more confidence, as you feel better about yourself and look better. As a result, you gain confidence that carries over to other aspects of your life. Furthermore, I learned that the gym can be used in combination of physical wellbeing and a social scene. For example, if you were to enroll in a smal group exercise class, such as cycling or aquatics, you meet new people who share the same interests and values as you. Finally, I learned that consistent exercise habits can actually save you money on your health insurance. According to the article, some health insurance companies ask you how often you exercise. Those who exercise at a higher rate, according to the article, are saving more money as a result.

How To Make Food Your Medicine

How To Make Food Your Medicine | Healthy Exercise and Eating Habits | Scoop.it
Most of us are conditioned to think that taking a pill out of a bottle will make us feel better. We don't generally think that fresh vegetables and fruit count toward healing. But it's true, food is the most powerful drug we have.

Jason's insight:

After reading this article, I learned that food can act as a powerful medicine in preventing and fighting diseases. According to the article, plant foods in particular have special molecules called phytonutrients that can turn on and off our DNA to fight and prevent diseases. As a result, it is recommended that we eat 8 to 10 portions of vegetables and green foods each day. Eating a diet rich in plants and greens can help prevent and fight diseases while eating a diet rich in sugar, preservatives, and processed foods can increase your risk of health diseases. Finally, I learned that everything in our body is a responce to our internal health. If you experience fatigue throughout the day, then it might indicate imbalances in your diet and in your life. Food can act as a powerful medicine in fighting and preventing threatening and serious diseases.
