Too little sleep lowers IQ: report | healthfit | Scoop.it
DJ Halp's insight:

The study is in the UK, but the lesson is global: Sleep counts. It's tough to prioritize it. It's tough to put a value on it. It's tough to commit to it. But it's important. Try a little harder every night.

America's kids eating healthier, getting fitter | Grist | healthfit | Scoop.it
The sweet news from a new study is that children are exercising more, watching TV less, and eating more healthful foods than they used to.
DJ Halp's insight:

More fruit, less sugar. But will the habits last, and are healthy options for kids affordable, accessible enough?

Urban Biking in Cold Climates | Sustainable Cities Collective

Urban Biking in Cold Climates | Sustainable Cities Collective | healthfit | Scoop.it
Minneapolis is a city with both skyway systems and universities with mass underground tunnels for shelter in the cold, so while Minneapolis is known for being one of the coldest cities in America, in 2011 Bicycling Magazine also claimed it be the...
DJ Halp's insight:

Minneapolis is so well known for its successful efforts to overcome its climate. The city's infrastructure seems built to support commerce, community, athletics, and more. I've only visited in the summer so I haven't seen it in action...did you know how much effort they put into making the city bike-friendly all twelve months of the year, even in their harsh winter?

7 next-generation gyms that focus on functional fitness

7 next-generation gyms that focus on functional fitness | healthfit | Scoop.it
These workout spots popping up all over New York focus on equipment you pick up (not sit on)—and learning how to move efficiently after your sweat sesh is over.
DJ Halp's insight:

Functional fitness is big and getting bigger. It's one of those things that's been around way longer than most people realize--it's a trend without the kind of naming and branding that make it an easy "craze" to follow. It's refreshing to think that places like these exist without too much of an effort to be a new fad. Rather, they're examples of habits you can stick with. Even if the location, style, or cost make these inaccessible, they set an example to follow on your own. One grat thing about functional fitness is that you can take it home, and consider it a more efficient use of your time commitment and better use of your fitness spending.

The 6 Best Bike Rides In And Around New York City

The 6 Best Bike Rides In And Around New York City | healthfit | Scoop.it
There are plenty of long, spectacular and scenic rides in and around the city to remind you that sometimes the best part of going from point A to point B is the journey itself.
DJ Halp's insight:

i admit i was skeptical about the headline, not that new york city doesn't have great routes, but so many of them have disruptions beyond construction. but these six really are worth a look, whether you're a first-time rider trying citibike or an experience rider looking to explore a new part of the city. just know that it's rare to find a nice long straight ride without interruption, construction, and of course congestion. (there is NOT A "fully-protected route guiding riders from Battery Park City all the way up to the George Washington Bridge.")

How many calories are you really burning?

How many calories are you really burning? | healthfit | Scoop.it
Think you just burned 800 calories at boot camp? Or 600 on your spin bike? Experts share the four factors influencing your very own, very subjective calorie burn.
DJ Halp's insight:

Hopefully you already know the basics here, but as technology continues to improve (and as access improves, but not as quickly) it's important to stay in check. Do you know how accurate your "calories burned" readout really is? And if you're using a new gadget, have you considered how off your old one might have been. Most importantly, just remember that the calorie information your device gives you is a decent estimate...a gauge of your burn, but possibly not much more than that. Your energy output is more personal than you may realize.

The Dallas Morning News | Options

The Dallas Morning News | Options | healthfit | Scoop.it
DJ Halp's insight:

Like many "excuse lists" this list probably has one or two items that may apply to you, but you'll find some decent advice for you two. If you guessed that "I don't have time" is the first one, you're right. And if you guessed that "make time" is the basic advice, you'd be right again. I know you're not going to just "wake up earlier" because an article told you too...the more important advice is to realize that you don't necessarily need to block off as much time as you might think.

How Intense Study May Harm Our Workouts

How Intense Study May Harm Our Workouts | healthfit | Scoop.it
A new study suggests that exercise simply feels harder when your brain is tired, so you quit earlier, even though objectively your muscles are still somewhat fresh.
DJ Halp's insight:

Don't ignore fatigue. A workout can snap you out of a funk, but a funk can (more easily) ruin your workout. Listen to your body to figure out your best time for a workout. If you find yourself starting and finishing tired, consider a schedule change to get the most out of the time you put into a workout. You could be wasting more exercise time than you realize. And wearing yourself out isn't much to be proud of.
