  • Emotional

Medicine and Dentistry: Undoing an Illogical 150-Year Divide

Medicine and Dentistry: Undoing an Illogical 150-Year Divide | The Future of Wellness & Healthcare | Scoop.it
It’s no secret that medicine and dentistry have evolved an unnatural professional separation that is helpful to no one and often causes unnecessary suffering. We can and should further integrate the two fields to better meet the needs of patients.
Art Jones's insight:

Excerpt: Today we have 152 accredited US medical schools and66 schools of dentistry in the United States. Many of them are literally right across the street from one another. But aside from water mains, most schools share very little, and there has been almost no attempt to integrate either their respective curriculums or the work their graduates go on to do. Not surprisingly, dentists went on to found their own schools and identity, which evolved in isolation from those of their medical counterparts.

What lies for the next wave of digital health and digital hospitals?

Art Jones's insight:

The Future of Healthcare

Excerpt: “What we’re beginning to see is ageing societies globally. By 2020 to 2025, we’re going to have 25% of the population over the age of 65.

We don’t have enough access to care, infrastructure, money, or a birth rate that’s going to pay into what is going to be the cost coverage for all these ageing societies,” he said.

“If business happens as usual – healthcare still depends on the fax, etc. – we will find ourselves unable to deliver a healthcare system our society needs over the next couple of decades.”

Preparing The Healthcare Workforce To Deliver A Digital Future

Preparing The Healthcare Workforce To Deliver A Digital Future | The Future of Wellness & Healthcare | Scoop.it
The success of digital transformation rests on the skills of the workforce. Digital health pioneer Eric Topol explores what this means in healthcare.
Art Jones's insight:

The Future of Healthcare

Excerpt:

With the potential for digital transformation in healthcare so great, and the progress so slow, a recent report for the U.K. National Health Service by digital health pioneer Dr Eric Topol is timely indeed.

The paper aims to assess how new technologies are likely to influence the roles and functions of clinical staff, and their support, over the next two decades. What new skills will be required? How will curricula and education need to change to meet this demand?

With 1.2 million employees, which puts it in the top 5 biggest employers in the world, implementing change is no small undertaking, but one that is crucial if the service is to move with the times.
