China to train 35,000 emergency response medical professionals by 2015 #SMEM #HPHEP

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Over 35,000 emergency response medical staff will be trained in the 2011-2015 period to strengthen the country's capability to overcome disasters and public health emergencies, health authorities said Thursday.

The government-funded program, detailing a massive training plan in the five years through 2015, was revealed in a Ministry of Health statement on Thursday.

China still faces heavy pressure in terms of emergency response to natural disasters, accidents and public health incidents while the training mechanism for its medical rescuers remains weak, it said.

To tackle that, a certain number of personnel from the health and disease control authorities, hospitals at various levels, as well as medical experts of emergency response in other public institutions will be paid to take the training -- 30,000 of whom will come from prefecture or county level units.

It noted that proposed courses will include medical emergency management, acute infectious diseases prevention and control, emergency medical treatment for acute poisonings and radiations.

Cyber Intrusion Blamed for Hardware Failure at Water Utility #HPHEP | Healthcare & Public Health Preparedness | Scoop.it

A recent cyber attack on a city water utility in Illinois may have destroyed a pump and appears to be part of a larger intrusion at a U.S. software provider, new information suggests. The incident is the latest to raise alarms about the security protecting so-called supervisory control and data acquisition system, or “SCADA” networks — increasingly Internet-connected systems designed to monitor and control complex industrial networks.

Association of Public Health Laboratories - APHL Public Health LabLog

Everyone has a story of when their life changed forever. It could be before kids or after kids – or a traumatic life event like the death of a spouse, or a happy event like graduating from university. For an entire generation it was 9/11 and the anthrax events that soon consumed those of us in public health.

Like many of you, I remember exactly where I was when the towers fell.
