3 Reasons Why You Should Have a Professional Mentor

3 Reasons Why You Should Have a Professional Mentor | Health Topics | Scoop.it
We’ve all been asked the question “Who’s your role model?” and have given all kinds of answers that range from President Obama, to Bill Gates, to Big Papi, to Grandpa. A more difficult question is “Who’s your mentor?

So what does this have to do with Health Topics?  If you are confident in your abilities, and understand your limitations such that you can get help in those areas, you will reduce the stress and anxiety levels.  There is no doubt that stress and health are linked.

In my own experience, without a mentor, I probably would not have been able to navigate through the corporate politics without her insights.  She willingly shared her thoughts on how she came to conclusions in certain situations, the process she used in analyzing data and applying that to make key decisions, and helped me build my own confidence in my capabilities.

I was promoted into a position before I thought I was ready for that level of responsibility, and my weekly mentoring sessions certainly helped me realize my own strengths, and understand my own weaknesses and build alliances with others who could help me fill in the gaps.

The most important lesson I got from my mentor:  Let it go.  You cannot do it all yourself.  Surround yourself with smart people who can help you and most importantly, your team, succeed.  When those smart people give you advice, listen, analyze, and move on it.

Don't forget to pay this forward also, not only to the brightest and best, because they will attract the attention of people looking for those skills, but also to the up-and-comers who who may need to get a nudge to move more into the foreground.

Ask Dr. K: Diet prevents gout attacks - Monterey County Herald

Ask Dr. K: Diet prevents gout attacks - Monterey County Herald | Health Topics | Scoop.it
Telegraph.co.uk  Ask Dr. K: Diet prevents gout attacks

Monterey County Herald

Dear Dr. K: Could my diet be triggering my gout? If so, what foods and beverages should I avoid to prevent future episodes?

I can attest to the fact that diet plays a significant role in avoiding gout attacks.  I am prone to these painful attacks, but have reduced the number of incidents by being aware of those items that may be triggers, and avoiding them, or at least substantially avoiding them in my diet.  Just because I might consume one of those trigger items does not mean that I will get an attack of gout.  For me at least, it seems to be cumulative.

In combination with a twice daily dose of Allopurinol, my diet regimen has been successful in almost eliminating gout attacks for me.  If an acute attack of gout does arise, I have another, very expensive prescribed medication I take, now available only as a patent medication since the FDA has pulled all the inexpensive generics of Colchicine off the market.

Column - Health care reform: Time to shift focus to care

Last month, the Supreme Court of the United States brought to an end a contentious legal battle over the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), the health reform law passed by Congress in 2010.

This one paragraph stands out for me: students can be covered until age 26.  While this may be true, I just went through a torchurous 3 months with my health insurance: they demand documentation with very specific wording and stringent requirements to prove that your dependents are eligible.  Birth certificates, marriage certificates, tax returns, college tuition bills marked paid, college schedules.  The problem is that there is a 3 month window, and I had to send away for ORIGINAL GOVERNMENT certificates.  I only ever had a birth certificate issued by the hospital.  Our marriage certificate was issued by the officiating minister.  The college tuition bills are paid online and they would not accept a screen print of the account.  My son is a 3rd year med student on rotations.  They would not accept a schedule of his rotations because it did not show that college credits were earned for each rotation.  So even if the Supreme Court says they must provide insurance, they  can make your life miserable in proving eligibillity.
