An open letter to Jeff Bezos–you are needed to disrupt the health care sector

An open letter to Jeff Bezos–you are needed to disrupt the health care sector | Living Health Systems | Scoop.it
Dear Mr. Bezos, Leave rationalizing the market for organic foods to one of your sidekicks, and tinkering with driverless cars to a crowded field of tech companies. You are needed to disrupt the health care sector. Only you have the vision, ambition, capital, and computing power this mission requires. Google comes close, but doe
Peter Eerens's insight:
Every country addresses health systems challenges differently. The more diverse your resources, the more diverse is the solution space you can explore. But often countries underestimate the resources they really have. It's an absolute fallacy to think that a lack of financial resources is they key obstacle to evolving ever stronger health systems. Genius is biologically rooted in human nature. We fail to nurture it at scale.

'Community health workers' emerging as bridge between at-risk communities and health care

'Community health workers' emerging as bridge between at-risk communities and health care | Living Health Systems | Scoop.it
Advocates say community health workers can help reduce health care spending and improve overall health in low-income communities.
Peter Eerens's insight:
Never really understood why health experts of countries with young health systems never traveled the world to offer  or sell technical assistance to introduce community based health workers... A lack of symmetry in international health.

Contesting World Order? Socioeconomic Rights and Global Justice Movements. | Living Health Systems | Scoop.it

Joe Wills' book "evaluates the counter-hegemonic potential of socioeconomic rights discourse and its capacity to contribute towards an alternative to the prevailing neo-liberal common sense of global governance".

Yes, we promote human rights based approaches in the design of health systems. But do we educate citizens to use that framework when those rights are violated?

The role of NGOs in Africa: are they a force for good? | Living Health Systems | Scoop.it
Non-governmental organisations are criticised for pandering to the whims of the donor community at the expense of local populations. The real question is: can they bring about real change?

This edited volume provides critical reflections on the interplay between politics and law in an increasingly transnationalized global political economy. It focuses specifically on the emergence and operation of new forms of governance that are…

Peter Eerens's insight:
Individual, public and global health are affected by private transnational governance by contract which profoundly affects the ability of individual states to create environments that positively influence critical determinants of health. Evolving health systems should develop a timely response to this challenge.

Systems thinking in public health: a bibliographic contribution to a meta-narrative review

Systems thinking in public health: a bibliographic contribution to a meta-narrative review | Living Health Systems | Scoop.it

Systems thinking is an increasingly popular subject of discussion within public health although its understanding and approaches remain unclear. Briefly tracing the introduction and development of these ideas and author groups in public health literature may provide clarity and opportunities for further learning, research and development

Peter Eerens's insight:
There is increased application of systems thinking, often as an additional perspective rather than as a fundamental approach towards  the practice of public health.

Peter Eerens's insight:
For whoever likes problems of a certain scale. Definitely not a straightforward pathway. My intuition: keep all players continuously informed about each other's visions, and encourage even more insurance initiatives. Ultimately, few decades from now, views will coalesce. I.e. don't try to "solve" a problem, but stimulate dynamics.

Finding a Path to Safety in Food Allergy: Assessment of the Global Burden, Causes, Prevention, Management, and Public Policy

Finding a Path to Safety in Food Allergy: Assessment of the Global Burden, Causes, Prevention, Management, and Public Policy | Living Health Systems | Scoop.it
"Finding a Path to Safety in Food Allergy delineates a roadmap to safety for those who have, or are at risk of developing, food allergy, as well as for others in society who are responsible for public health"
Peter Eerens's insight:
A comprehensive approach towards addressing health issues benefits from applying a systems perspective. This report shows how holistic and reductionist approaches are not antagonistic but complementary to each other. A development/ecological model captures interacting systems that influence both risks and safety (See Chapter 1 p. 30).

The Next Health System

The Next Health System | Living Health Systems | Scoop.it

Our health system is in crisis, filled with perverse incentives, out of control costs, and deteriorating outcomes. How can new scientific understandings of the holistic and ecological basis of health inform the design of a democratized health system?

Peter Eerens's insight:
What if current discussions about the future of the healthcare system in the United States would also dwell on the ideas offered by thinkers such as Jamie Harvie. Executive Director of the Institute for a Sustainable Future.
Jamie Harvie’s reflexion also demonstrates why we need to abandon the silos in which the thinking about health systems takes place: health system development trajectories of economic giants and those of smaller economies may differ, but in evolutionary terms their dynamics have so many drivers in common.
