Eating late may wreak havoc on your body - Futurity

Eating late may wreak havoc on your body - Futurity | HEALTH PROMOTION AND PREVENTION | Scoop.it
Eating late at night could be worse for your health than you might think.

Compared to eating earlier in the day, prolonged delayed eating can increase weight, insulin, and cholesterol levels, and negatively affect fat metabolism, and hormonal markers implicated in heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems, according to new research.

The findings offer the first experimental evidence on the metabolic consequences of consistent delayed eating compared to daytime eating, and were presented at SLEEP 2017, the 31st Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies on Sunday.

“We know from our sleep loss studies that when you’re sleep deprived, it negatively affects weight and metabolism in part due to late-night eating, but now these early findings, which control for sleep, give a more comprehensive picture of the benefits of eating earlier in the day,” says Namni Goel, a research associate professor of psychology in psychiatry in the division of sleep and chronobiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and lead author of the ongoing study.

“Eating later can promote a negative profile of weight, energy, and hormone markers—such as higher glucose and insulin, which are implicated in diabetes, and cholesterol and triglycerides, which are linked with cardiovascular problems and other health conditions.”

The Measles Vaccination Narrative in Twitter: A Quantitative Analysis

The Measles Vaccination Narrative in Twitter: A Quantitative Analysis | HEALTH PROMOTION AND PREVENTION | Scoop.it
ConclusionsThe cyber-physical debate nexus, which connects the cyber narrative in social media to the corresponding geographical space, allows the study of the public’s concerns, views, and responses to health-related issues and thus offers a new avenue for exploring health narratives. As these new mechanisms of discourse are emerging, health communications and health informatics have to adapt to these newfound capabilities and challenges. Advancing our understanding of the mechanisms and patterns of communication in these media is therefore becoming increasingly important. Toward this goal, this study showcased emerging data analysis approaches. These approaches are inherently interdisciplinary, bringing together principles and practices from health informatics, data analytics, and geographical analysis. Further coalescing such capabilities will advance health communication, supporting the design of more effective strategies that take into account public perceptions and concerns. At the same time, we need to remain cognizant of privacy issues associated with the nature of social media communications. Studying the narrative rather than the individuals and aggregating data in geographical spaces can maintain the relevance of the analysis while also preserving user anonymity.

How a lack of sleep affects your brain – and personality

How a lack of sleep affects your brain – and personality | HEALTH PROMOTION AND PREVENTION | Scoop.it
In 1959, Peter Tripp, a popular New York DJ, pledged to stay awake for 200 hours for charity while continuing to host his radio show.

Studies into sleep deprivation were rare at the time so no one knew what to expect. This made it a major event, not only for Tripp’s millions of listeners, but also for the scientific community.

The subsequent impact of the “wakeathon” on Tripp’s mind was far more dramatic than anyone had expected. The personality of a man normally described as cheerful and upbeat appeared to significantly change as time went by. By the third day he had become highly irritable, cursing and insulting even his closest friends. Towards the end of his endeavour, he began to hallucinate and exhibit paranoid behaviours.

But despite the concerns of the doctors monitoring him (and with the help of the stimulants they gave him), he persisted and finally went to bed after 201 hours of continuous wake time.

Modern laboratory studies have replicated some of the behaviours seen in Tripp as a consequence of sleep loss. Sleep deprivation or prolonged restricted sleep results in increasing irritability, worsening mood, and feelings of depression, anger, and anxiety. Some argue that sleep loss leads to heightened emotional reactivity.
