Chronic diseases are often complex and require smooth collaborative interaction between a variety of healthcare providers with the knowledge, skills and awareness of both patient needs as well as the political and economic constraints which directly or indirectly impact on a patient’s health and social well being.

In my opinion it has never made more sense to meet this healthcare challenge with an innovative solution for higher education.

The One Minute Wonder Network - Maximising Educational Opportunities in the Work Place

The clinical day has frequent short, routine pauses which could allow for brief bites of medical education. The One Minute Wonders (OMWs) have originated around this concept. OMW boards contain focused educational displays which contain information that can be read and absorbed in just one minute. They are displayed in an area where clinical teams regularly pause and have the opportunity to read a bite of medical education. The original OMW board was introduced in our ED resus room, next to the gas machine to take advantage of the 60-90 seconds spent stood waiting for blood gas results. Anything is featured - ECGs changes, XR diagnosis, new equipment information, a specific illness, clinical signs.  Other departments and specialties that similarly had areas where clinical teams would regularly pause (eg. by the kettle, handover room) have since set up OMW boards. Displays are shared between sites so there is now a large archive of OMWs available to share, so starting up and running a board is not too much work.

www.omwnetwork.weebly.com has more details on the project.

A simple idea for developing an online resource.  You could create something similar using an online whiteboard and recording your screen or using an iPad app such as ShowMe, ScreenChomp or Explain Everything.  A video like this could also be incorporated into a more complex learning resource developed in a tool like Captivate or Articulate.
