» Therapy Helps Access Our Creative Inner Life - The Creative Mind | Mental Health & #Wellbeing | Scoop.it

Many creative people have talked about how valuable it can be to use therapy or counseling for dealing with challenges, or to enhance self-understanding.

Maggie Gyllenhaal says she began therapy without a “specific, clear, rational thing” that made her start, “but as soon as I did, everything in my life changed, almost immediately.” She continued, “There’s another part of me working that isn’t the intellectual side – the unconscious – and that was not awake most of my life. Not actively. There were times when it would push through, but now I feel I’m really honoring it.”

Negative Emotions are Key to Well-Being

Negative Emotions are Key to Well-Being | Mental Health & #Wellbeing | Scoop.it

Feeling sad, mad, critical or otherwise awful? Surprise: negative emotions are essential for mental health.

Anger and sadness are an important part of life, and new research shows that experiencing and accepting such emotions are vital to our mental health. Attempting to suppress thoughts can backfire and even diminish our sense of contentment.

Instead of backing away from negative emotions, accept them. Acknowledge how you are feeling without rushing to change your emotional state. Many people find it helpful to breathe slowly and deeply while learning to tolerate strong feelings or to imagine the feelings as floating clouds, as a reminder that they will pass. I often tell my clients that a thought is just a thought and a feeling just a feeling, nothing more.

A lot of insight in those so called negative emotions. When they are truly heard, they tend to integrate better, and become harmonious.
Maria Teresa Frezet terapeuta olistica's curator insight, June 7, 2013 3:52 PM

The point is always the same... If we refuse something, this comes back even bigger! Whike if we accept we are made of different parts (emotions), without putting an excessive judgment on it, we will soon experience a real balance and a steady well-being!

We learn so much about ourselves when we are aware and allow our negative emotions with a sense of curiousity. Learning to walk alongside instead of up against our negative emotion is important to our emotional health.

Looking for information on how stress can hurt you?   Here is an excellent infograph on the ways stress affects our physical body.    As you can see the hazards of stress are more than just a bad day and a headache.

Stress can cause chronic fatigue, panic disorders, hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome, weight gain, muscle tension, etc to name a few.   It does not matter where your stress is coming from either.    Any source of stress can cause these effects on your body.

MentalHealthCop's curator insight, August 19, 2013 8:48 PM

More and more I'm hearing that Street Triage is the answer to a lot of the problems the police face in dealing with mental health calls.  It is intuitive: put mental health professinoals with the police and the decision-making and assessment will improve and it is estimated that use of s136 of the Mental Health Act will reduce.

THIS IS NOT THE ANSWER to the higher profile problems of policing / mental health.  It is already suggested in one of the existing pilot areas, that nurses on the shoulders of police officers reinforce the very approach that the police need to resist to avoid in order to mitigate clinical and safety risks.

We should train our cops properly and resource our mental health services, rather than do this.  This is "doing the wrong thing righter."
