Thinking Big - Personalized Medicine - The Atlantic

Thinking Big - Personalized Medicine - The Atlantic | Health and Biomedical Informatics | Scoop.it

Personalized Medicine
Every year, we waste billions on ineffective prescriptions—for instance, only 30% of Alzheimer’s drugs work for any given patient. Worse, adverse drug reactions often cause injury and death. But what if doctors knew in advance if a particular drug or treatment was likely to work? Personalized medicine will make this possible. With our ability to decode the human genome faster and more affordably, and new applications for this genetic information being rapidly discovered, personalized medicine is poised to save lives, time, and money by tailoring each patient’s treatment specifically to his or her own genetic makeup. It also holds the potential to reshape whole industries and impact our global economy. Video Provided by: Fidelity Investments, LLC.

From The Blog: Meaningful Use to Quantified Us

From The Blog: Meaningful Use to Quantified Us | Health and Biomedical Informatics | Scoop.it
Leonard Kish's latest post explores how mobile health technology is linking Meaningful Use to real individual outcomes.

On the surface, the areas of Meaningful Use and quantified self may seem far apart: one’s a government-run incentive program to enable health IT and the other’s has the appearance a self-improvement program for data hungry geeks, but they are part of a broad spectrum related to relevant data, architectures and patient engagement that will be needed to fulfill the triple aim. This was clear during two very different, but equally compelling conferences that built on this theme, OSCON and Healthcare Unbound, during the week of July 16th.

If you’re not familiar with the term quantified self, it means measuring and providing feedback on things you can measure about yourself. Wikipedia states, quantified self is “a movement to incorporate technology into data acquisition on aspects of a person’s daily life in terms of inputs (e.g., food consumed, quality of surrounding air), states (mood, arousal, blood oxygen levels), and performance (mental and physical).”

We know that games and measures work in a variety of realms for behavior change, and although often dismissed, money does motivate. Our economy is built on this simple concept.
