WWF

WWF | HCS Learning Commons Newsletter | Scoop.it
Welcome to wwf

The Schools for a Living Planet program, an initiative from WWF, empowers educators with the tools and resources to engage students on the importance of environmental issues. Schools for a Living Planet provides tools and resources to bring the power of the environment into the classroom.

WWF-Canada’s Schools for a Living Planet program offers teachers tools to empower students to make a difference in our planet’s future. Each resource is linked to grade-appropriate curriculum, and the in-class activities use a variety of formats that work with many teaching and learning styles.

One of WWF-Canada’s goals is to make young people aware of the conservation issues we face in our country and around the world. The result is an in-depth teaching tool based on content you can trust.

Schools for a Living Planet builds knowledge by providing a different environmental resource for each grade.

Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

Great lesson plans on nature conservation issues for all grades.

Lesson_Up_Up_Away.pdf

In this lesson students encounter the key concepts of intellectual property, learning the difference between copyright and trademark and coming to understand how these affect how media products are created and sold. The lesson uses the legal decision regarding the rights to the comic book hero Superman to help students understand the different ways in which intellectual properties can be owned, leased and sold. It begins with a discussion that examines students’ understanding of intellectual property principles and then looks closely at the Superman case to introduce key topics and questions. This is followed by a series of activities that ask students to explore the key ideas they’ve learned and consider how intellectual property issues are relevant to them. As a summative activity, students hold a debate on intellectual property issues.

Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, November 12, 2013 3:15 PM

This site developed by Moms of Dyslexics provides a set of apps that can support dyslexics and struggling readers. As a Mom of an adult dyslexic, I want to thank these Moms who have created this site for families that have a child with dyslexia.

Here are the apps they have reviewed on this site:

> Sound Literacy-$24.99 Sound Literacy can be used in conjunction with any curriculum that emphasizes phonemic awareness, phonological processing, systematic phonetic instruction, or word building with ‘meaningful word parts’.

> Dyslexia Quest- $1.99: The Yeti Master will take your child on an adventure while testing working memory, processing speed, visual memory, phonological awareness, auditory memory, and sequencing skills.

> Montessori Crosswords-$2.99: Highly rated and based on Montessori learning methods, this app will aid in the development of reading and spelling skills through phonemic awareness.

> Spell Trekking-Free:  Your child will learn to spell while trekking through space on the S.S. Spell Trek.

> Letter Quiz-Free and Full Version-$1.99: Consists of four games to help your child learn letter recognition and writing practice.

> Dyslexic Like Me-$1.99:  The purpose of Dyslexic Like Me is to teach the child what dyslexia is and about successful people who also have dyslexia.

> See Read Say-$1.99:  The visual nature of a dyslexic can make learning sight words difficult.

> Phonics Genius-Free:  Phonetic awareness is essential to reading and this app takes it to a new level.  The app contains thousands of words grouped into 225 phonic categories.
